Any tips for getting up (and staying up) on the toes?
This pose definitely lives up to its name!
I stretch my whole body up, tighten my abs, tuck my butt under, tighten my quads and lock my knees, just before going downwards, and even going downwards I keep my torso up as high as I can and abs tight the whole time.
I have had success with the same techniques plus keeping my arms extended and firm. It helps me to get higher on my toes if I think about pushing my ankles forwards like I am trying to stretch the fronts of my ankles.
All the above tips are great … and … remember your toes have muscles too!
So unless you’ve been a ballerina in a previous life (though I see in your interests you list motorcycles – some toe work their depending on what you ride! Gabrielle & I love bikes … used to race ’em) you’ve probably not had a lot of opportunity to strengthen ankles/feet/toes.
It took me quite some months to get up high – and even now, the only way I’ll get my feet up on my toes as high as Gabrielle can is by wearing her high-heels.
But that’s another story … 😉
So I’d say, follow the advice & tips above and recognize that you are doing some degree of strength training and for that reason your progress may be gradual – and therefore harder to track. I’d suggest take a photo of your “best pose” now … and then again in 3 months time. You’ll be surprised!

PS. As a Private Member you DO have access to an excellent Pose Clinic on this pose, which I hope you have watched!

Hi Robert
Can you please tell me if you think it is about your ankle flexibility, ankle strength, toe flexibility or toe strength?
You will probably work out what your issue is with a little dry run through when you read this.
Just as I am writing this Robert has also posted a response! 😆

Gabrielle 🙂PS I do have some tips for you depending on your answer!!!
It’s probably a combination of ankle flexibility and ankle strength.
I have high arches and had a lot of ankle injuries/sprains when I was younger and playing sports. My left ankle is especially problematic as I had a nasty sprain there years ago where the doctor said I would have been much better off if I had just broken it. My left ankle is definitely much tighter than my right.
In Fixed Firm, I can’t lean back any at all due to tight ankles.
I did check out the pose clinic and picked up a lot of good tips from that, but I am still trying to sort out my ankles and balance. 🙂
Thanks to everybody for the tips. I’ll give them a try.
I used to have really tight ankles, but Fixed Firm has loosened them a lot. I too have high arches. I find by pointing my toes when sitting in Fixed Firm it helps flatten out my feet somehow. I also do this now in Rabbit – point my toes, I mean. It helps to keep my feet on the floor. I’m not sure if that makes any sense to you…
Hi Bonnie
You gave some good tips. I do want to point out something that rang some alarm bells. You should NEVER under ANY circumstances point your toes in Rabbit pose. Let’s transfer any questions about this to the Rabbit pose section if this goes any further. Putting energy in your feet like this changes the pose in a variety of ways not least of which is causing tension in areas that should be relaxed including arms and back.
I know you have the Hot Yoga MasterClass so please go and review Rabbit (pages 260-265) and check out the feet! :cheese:

I somehow missed that the first time around… any chance we could get those pictures added to the pose clinic? 😉
