Hi Gabrielle – I have received the Masterclass Book – fantastic resource. One question that I have though as I couldn’t find an answer in it – I have a partial tear in my biceps tendon at the elbow which I am waiting to visit a surgeon for. I am also suffering from fluid build up and calcification and a Morton’s Neuroma in my right foot between the second and third toes! All at once! So I am unable to practice as I can’t stand up on my toes and balancing hurts my foot. Also anything that uses my bicep muscle in my right arm is too painful (the doctor has told me to be careful because I could rip the whole thing off!). Any tips for what I can do in the meantime while I am waiting to get “fixed”?

    Hello Barb

Thank you very much for your lovely words. I am so pleased you are loving your book.

I need to ask you what your doctor or surgeon has told you to do or to avoid doing with your ARM. I have an idea about what you can do but I would like your guidelines first, please.

I assume that the neuroma is a definitive diagnosis. Is that correct? I believe there are a number of things in a provisional diagnoses.

It must be quite disconcerting to have limited movement and balance because of that foot. Have you been recommended surgery, ablation, or ???

What have you tried so far? Any toe separation devices? Orthotics?

What poses are you able to do with no modifications? Perhaps you could answer that question separately under subheadings of ARM and FOOT, otherwise we could get a tad confusing.

We can make the call later on if we need to make 2 separate threads, OK?

    So, let’s get started :cheese:

My doctor has told me not to do anything “heavy” with my arm as I could rip the bicep off completely. I am still waiting to hear from the orthopaedic surgeon for an appointment “sigh” takes sooo long.

With my foot I am having to go through the public system so that could take months. The neuroma is results from an ultrasound that I had done. The doctor thought they would probably do injections of some sort. So I haven’t tried anything yet.

    FOOT
I can do all the floor exercises with no pain in my foot, however because I cant use my arm this is limited.

    ARM
    Everything hurts!!

    Hi Barb

ARM: Pray tell, how did you tear your biceps? Are you allowed to and can you straighten your arm? Have you been told to bend it? Or exercise it? They must have said something more than ‘no heavy stuff’. 😉

When you say everything hurts with your arm, does that mean in and outside of yoga?
Presumably you are not to do heavy work because bending your arm is working your biceps which would exacerbate a tear. And again, straightening your arms is stretching it out. So whatever specific info you’ve been given beyond ‘don’t lift heavy stuff’ would be useful.

FOOT: Apparently trying toe separation devices works for some people because it gives more room to the nerve.

Yoga and foot: When you say floor exercises are you saying that you are unable to do ANY of the standing exercises from Pranayama through to Toe Stand?

Make no assumptions! Because I cannot see you and we cannot get immediate responses to each other’s questions I may need clarification on details. Just give me as much as you can.

I lifted a very heavy box of files at work and felt pain in my elbow (the inside) which lasted more than a week. I asked a physio at work who told me to do bicep curls and wrist turns (?) with a weight of about three pounds. She said it was strained. After another couple of weeks with no improvement at all I talked to another physio who just said keep your arm close to your body and don’t lift anything heavy. He also said to keep it moving otherwise it would get stiff. He also assumed it was just a sprain. Finally after two months I went to my doctor for something else and mentioned it to her. She sent me for an ultrasound where I was told I had a partial tear in the distal biceps insertion (?) I am now waiting to hear from an orthopaedic surgeon. And yes it hurts to drive, to brush my teeth, to push open doors, to turn over, wakes me at night etc etc

    FOOT
Pranayama breathing is ok as there is no balancing involved. As soon as I have to balance in any of the poses or in triangle, wide leg head to floor, head to knee bending forward – the pressure that goes on to the ball of my foot hurts. I haven’t been told about any orthotics etc. Our medical system must be quite different here in NZ. We are only allowed to ask one question at a doctors appointment and they generally just refer you on to someone else. If you have no insurance then you just have to wait until you are called through the public hospital system so it can take a while.

Hence me asking you 🙂 Thank you Gabrielle!!!

    Hi Barb

What? That’s extraordinary! Does that mean that you have to make 2 separate appointments? One for the arm and one for the leg? I can’t imagine being only permitted to ask about one thing! Fascinating.

So I do believe you have to continue moving your arm with gentle bends and also open it up. Nothing that will cause excruciating pain. If you don’t move your arm or habitually hold it in one place then connective tissue will brace the area to protect it and make it increasingly immoveable. Instead of healthy connective tissue running along the lines of movement, with stillness the conn tissue will lay itself down in a network of cross hatching. What improves that is gentle movement and possibly gentle massage. You are the one who can work out what will best suit you in this instance.

As for your foot, I would like you to test out the concept of toe separation. Whether you do that when you’re sitting, yoga-ing or walking it is not important. What I would like to know is with varying degrees of separation (not six :cheese: ) is there any relief at all? You don’t need to go and buy anything at this stage. You could look at using some foam, some material, some tissue anything you have around the house even cotton wool. In theory the space gained should help neural transmission.

If you are still wanting to do yoga then I suggest the next step is to make 2 lists.
The first one is for the effects on the arm. List each pose in order and whether the pose is possible and what if anything you have been doing to accommodate the pose. Then do another list for the foot. You will find the English and Sanskrit names of all the poses listed on the main page of the forum. Or go to the free pose gallery that you gained access to by signing up for the forum and newsletters.

Are you practising at home or in a studio? This can help me, along with the lists, work out what you can do to keep your hand in at yoga without exacerbating your issues so that you can still enjoy your yoga (or at least enjoy what it does for you 😉 ). I can but try!

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
