Hi to all!
A little about myself… I’m a college student living in Northern CA who kinda-sorta commutes to university. Basically, I spend 3.5 days in my little college town, then as soon as school and part-time job are done I hop in my car and drive 100 miles back home, where I spend my latter half of the week.
An old friend of mine recently became a Hot Yoga Teacher, and he’s got me very interested in taking classes. I’ve found a Bikram Yoga Studio in my college town and plan to pay the intro price of $20 for 10 consecutive days (leaving for half the week means I’m not getting my money’s worth… but what can a homesick college kid do? 🙂 ). Since I commute, I can probably squeeze in 4 sessions a week before I leave town – but is that enough for a total newbie? I’ve been prowling around the forums for hours reading up, and you experts seem to stand by “pain first, chill later” – meaning 5+ days a week until it becomes routine, then perhaps cutting back to 3-4 days/wk for maintenance. I’m just taking my first step and already I can’t follow the ideal schedule!
I used to be into track and volleyball back in my healthier teen days… but work and school have swallowed up my life for the past few years and I’ve basically ceased all forms of exercising. My current physical condition is far from tip top – I’m 20 years old and my back/ ankles hurt if I stay standing too long, I’m inflexible, easily tired, and overall pretty out of shape :shut: I also suffer from mild scoliosis (probably no thanks to being in the computer generation). I’m 5’3″ and 130lbs; I so desperately miss my flab-less 110 days, its become my motivation to start hot yoga!
Well… consider this my intro to the forum post 😆 Hi everyone! And thanks in advance to any words of wisdom <3

Hi Eva
You can only work with what you’ve got! When I first started it was a few days before Christmas. So like it or not I could only do 4 classes and then the studio was closed for about 4 days. It really isn’t necessary to get too rational or logical about what you should be doing or what your yoga should be doing for you in what time frame. Back then, there was only 1 hot yoga studio in the whole country, there was no forum on line there was no support or information. Chill, enjoy your practice and go back home and enjoy that too!
Namaste
Gabrielle 🙂That sounds fine! You are young and should get back into shape in no time. 🙂
Hi Eva,
I hear you… I’m in the same boat.
I’m a flight attendant from the Netherlands, practicing for one year now. I haven’t been able to come in every day either, cause I spent a lot of time a brought. When I’m a brought a try to visit a Bikram yoga studio when ever possible. But a single lesson is brutal! For example I’m in Bangkok right now and I’m spending 800 bath a lesson, thats 23,50 in US Dollars. A month I spent approximately 8 lessons a brought, that’s ±188 dollar a month and that’s without my classes in the Netherlands and without transportation (public transportation doesn’t get you everywhere, especially not in de US)
So it would be nice if there could be something like a international card (or at least a discount cart) , maybe since Bikram is going franchise this would be a logical new step (the world is getting smaller for every body)
So PLEASE let Mr Bikram know what your reality is… The more people do, the more chance there will come a solution one day! @ http://www.bikramyoga.comFor the mean time a can suggest Gabrielle’s masterClass cd to practise at home or what helps me a lot is Lucas STRETCHING SCHEDULE at Yoga Body
Cood luck and maybe I will be seeing you in one of your classes in your college town… you never know… it’s a small world out there. 😉

Thanks for everyone’s replies! I’m following a natural routine and its been two days since I started… and I LOVE IT! It makes me so happy and proud at the end of my lessons that I weathered through them. My whole body is sore right now due to all the stretching, but its a clear sign that my body’s going through good changes 🙂
Congratulations on getting started…that is often the hardest part. I am so glad that you feel so good. You’ll now be able to figure out when and how to go and the driving force that keeps you coming back is how good you feel and feel about yourself when you go.
Enjoy the Bliss and keep us posted.
