    Hi everyone,

I just joined the site but I’ve been lurking for a little while. I’ve been doing Bikram yoga for about a month and a half now. I am a former dancer so I am pretty flexible. Today when I was doing the back bend in half-moon pose, I blacked out and fell down, hitting my head on the floor. How embarrassing! My back bend in this pose is really deep, usually I can see the backs of my feet. I felt fine before I blacked out and I felt fine and continued class after I came to. Is there any reason this could have happened? I don’t eat heavy meals before class, and I drink half a box of coconut water before class and the other half after. I also drink tons of water throughout the day. I love this yoga practice so I’ve been trying my best to learn everything I can and to change my habits to do better in class. I’d appreciate any insight, and I look forward to talking to everyone on the forums 🙂

I’ve only seen one person pass out in class before and it was early on in half moon as well. And it’s a pose where I’ve gotten a little light headed once or twice myself.

My suspicion is that it’s due to the tendency to hold your breath in this position. I know I’ve caught myself holding my breath, as it seems “easier” to go farther into the pose when you are not inhaling. While it’s good for max flexibility, not so good for staying conscious!

If you’re really focused on maintaining consistent deep breaths then maybe it’s something else, but that seems like the most obvious possibility.

That makes a lot of sense! I did notice I was having trouble breathing through my nose this class; I’m really congested from allergies. I caught myself in a lot of other poses breathing through my mouth, so I bet in my back bend I just held my breath completely.

Thanks! I wouldn’t have even thought of that, but it definitely makes a lot of sense!

Aaahh breathing! Simply quite underrated! :cheese:
