I’ve been doing hot yoga for about 3 months now. For the first 6 weeks I did three classes per week, since then it’s been four classes per week. Sometime around week 6 I developed bruises right in front of my hip bones from floor bow. I struggle with this pose. I can easily reach both feet, and I can kick up, but rather than “rolling forward like the wheel” I seem to roll backwards if I try to look up. The only way I can bring my feet up higher is to look forward, not up. If I let my legs drift open more, it’s easier to get my feet up higher.
All those details don’t really go to what I’m asking, though. I guess I’m just curious if the bruises are normal or if it’s a sign I’m doing something wrong?
(Also, the bruises sometimes hurt during locust, but I’m pretty sure it’s just because I can’t get my arms between my hip bones yet. When my hips end up on my forearms, it hurts the hip bruises.)
Thank you!
Hey!
I had the same thing. For months, actually. I think bow pose is the cause. My teacher told me to focus on kicking the thighs up by engaging the quads. That seems to work really well and I no longer have bruises.
Hope that helps!
Hi Lisa,
I am a graduate from Gabrielle’s Teacher Training!
Where do you grab your feet in Bow Pose? What is your outcome in that pose? What are you really focused on? The bruises on your hipbones in that case probably indicate that you have to roll forward more, so you balance on the soft part of your belly and not on the hips- as you said.
Hmm.. I never had bruises from practising yoga. Next time maybe you can try to fold a towel and place it underneath your hip if you feel so much pain, that it stops you from doing certain poses.
In Lotus pose your arms may never be between your two hipbones (which certainly doesn’t mean that you are not getting the benefits of the pose). My forearms are directly under my hipbones and I don’t think they’ll ever be closer than that 🙂
Namaste,
Andrea
I also had bruises on each hip in the first few months–like the size of a quarter on the front of each hip bone. I initially tried folding/doubling my mat up under my hips, which helped, but I often got scolded by teachers for the “disruption” 🙂
One thing I was doing that may have contributed to the bruising was opening my knees too wide. I notice that now that I focus on not letting my knees open as wide (e.g. keeping them closer to hips width), it is easier for me to keep forward on my abdomen with less pressure on my hip bones. I cannot bend my back nearly as far when I do it this way, but my instructors have said it is better to keep the legs/knees in and that eventually the flexibility in the back will come. Anyway, I haven’t had bruises since I started that modification, so maybe give it a try? Good luck!
