Hello! I just found this forum, and I am sure I will be a regular visitor thanks for so much great information.
I am currently living in Mysore, India and doing Ashtanga Vinyasa six times a week for 1 1/2 hours per day. This is the fourth week of such intensive practice (and my first time doing yoga, although I have done pilates in the past) and I have developed strong, uncomfortable pain in my BUM! The pain is not muscular, but sharper, and right inside both of my buttocks, under my sit-bones.
Poses that have been giving me the most trouble are in the Primary Series – front bending – my yoga teacher began by giving quite strong adjustments in these poses which is, i guess, how the pain started.
My main question is what have I done to myself(?!) and should I continue to do yoga or give my poor bottom a rest for a while?
Thank so much for your reply!!
Hello again!
I have done some more research and found out what it is I have done to myself (I think, waiting for my physio appointment on Tuesday). 🙂
The name of the syndrome is Piriformis Syndrome and is a result of this short muscle putting pressure on my sciatic nerve. There is a very good article here.
Cheers guys! Look after your Piriformis! It is a pain in the ass to have what I have. 😀
Hi Emma
How is your butt feeling these days? 😆 I don’t say that to many people by the way! But in this case it seems apt. What were you given to do that solved your problem? Or is it still a work in progress?
Namaste
