    Hi, all.

I’d like to learn more about core strength. Exactly what is core strength? Where is it centered? Is there a way to test core strength so that you can determine where you need to focus? Which poses help build it the most?

    Thanks, Elizabeth G.

    Hi Elizabeth,

I’d probably direct you to a reasonably expert source first to read up on it – that will start to give you a hint about which poses are likely to help you develop it:

And definitely look at Gabrielle’s video:

Then we’ll chime in with more when you get back to us (and anyone else feel free to add other ideas of course!)

Thanks, Robert. Your response is really precise and helpful. There is a lot to digest in the article; following its links will take many visits to the site . Gabrielle’s video answers some of my questions as well. I’ll look for a ball to lie on. My back thinks that sounds deliciously stretchy.

What is your opinion on leg lifts done while lying flat on the floor while pressing the back into the floor? Are they dangerous?

    Thanks, Elizabeth

    Hi Elizabeth

I am not sure if you would say that the other leg lifts are dangerous. However I do feel that the lifts with the ball feel more efficient and effective, plus they are self-limiting. If you have the ball positioned too high up then you simply can’t even fudge a lift and there is no risk of damage as far as my experience goes. I think you can more easily fudge or force the lift when you are lying completely flat on the ground and also strain or risk damage in the low back.

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂

I agree – not so much dangerous, but maybe more risk in a possible strain.

Personally if I do it without the ball (and I’ve only really done that for experimentation) then I feel too much strain on my back, so I don’t do it!

    Go the ball!

    🙂

Thanks, you two. I’ve ordered a 9 inch ball and will let you know how it goes. 🙂

Where do you get the ball from – is there a certain type?

I googled “yoga mini exercise ball” and came up with several sites. The one I ordered is from good old “amazon.com”. It was less than $10. I haven’t received it yet, so I can’t recommend it at this point. Perhaps Gabrielle and Robert can recommend something wonderful?
