I’ve always done weights of some sort and my workout week for the past 10 years has been typically:
Weights – 3 days (usually with some short cardio to start)
Cardio – spin or boxing: 2 days
Yoga – (not hot) 1 day
Core/Pilates – 1-2 daysThis basic formula has worked for me for years -and when I say worked – i’ve felt and looked great. I also eat largely south beach. Lately I’ve been stressed and anxious and I turned to yoga – so I’ve been doing:
Yoga – 4 days (3 truly hot Bikram, 1 core -a little less hot)
High Intensity Weights – 3 daysBut I’m beginning to feel run down. And I’m not loving my current weight workout. I’m sort of wanting to mix it up. but weights have been my bread and butter for so long. I wondered if there is anyone else out there that has cut out weights for more yoga and how did it go?
(PS I did say a few posts back I had a lot of questions)
To directly answer your question, I quit lifting years ago in favor of yoga and more integrative type training.
After trying various types of weight training over years. the chances of ending up with joint problems and injury became apparent. And I never really liked or thought it a good idea that weight training for the most part treats the muscles as separate units. Back. biceps, shoulders, etc. And I don’t think it ever really translated well to real world ability either. You can get very strong for pretty much a one shot deal but that’s about it. On the other hand if you want to look like a bodybuilder then weights are the way to go. But then we are all an experiment of one.
Maybe you are just over training and need to back off a bit. Weight lifting at a true high intensity level will wear anyone down that isn’t taking drugs.
The heat may be dehydrating you also. I have never thought that the high level of heat in hot yoga was really necessary but that’s just me.
Thanks HankGretchen.
Lots to think about there – I’ve certainly had my issues with joints and tendons. I’ve been doing the body part thinking for 20+ years now since my brother took me to his gym one spring break.I’m still loving the hot yoga -but the mornings I’m supposed to do my 20min. kettleworks workout I dread it. So I don’t think it is the heat as I feel good otherwise. I need to get on some coconut water. I have allergies and have been trying to get my electrolytes with whole foods and not supplements.
Vancouver Canada’s Costco has 12 big cans of coconut juice for 12 bucks. (There’s really no other juice in it besides the coconut) and it has 640 mgs of potassium. yummy, yummy, yummy.

I drank soo much of Coconut water while I was pregnant (long story -but I needed electrolytes badly) -it can get quite $$$ -I’ll be sure to check costco. -
