I’ve been practicing Bikram yoga for two years and last month on class number 245 I was able to twist at least one leg in this asana for the first time. After performing the first set of eagle pose, I’m able to twist the left leg over the right one but after that I feel dizzy and I have to sit down and miss the second set. This is going on for 10 classes now.
Reaching the first twist was difficult, since I have muscular legs I couldn’t do it even after practicing Bikram for a long time. My instructor told me to practice the twist before the class, laying down just to open my hips and this was very helpful!

The question is, is there something wrong or the dizziness will go away eventually?

    Thanks,

    Hello Guillermo

My! That’s curious! So, I gather this dizziness never happened before. Congratulations for getting ‘the wrap’.

There could be quite a number of little things that are happening. I would have to ask some questions to work it out.

    >> Is your class a recital scripted class? In other words, are you being told to sit down as low as possible, and lift the leg as high as possible?

The answer to this will help guide me to the next step.

    See you back here soon

    Hi Gabrielle,

Yes, my class is a scripted one, 100% Bikram compliant :-). And I actually try to sit down as low as possible and lift the leg as high as possible, otherwise I’m not able to wrap the feet.

Just to explain a little further the “dizziness” is like I’m going to faint after I unwrap the leg.

My theory is that the circulation of blood get 100% blocked and when I unwrap the leg the flow is overwhelming, could it be?

    Namaste.

    Hello Guillermo

Would you be willing to try these instructions for Eagle pose? You’ll find my step-by-step instructions are near the top of the page with bold headings to assist you.

Please do your best to follow these instructions over the space of a number of classes (so you can observe and refine your technique with the instituted changes) and then come back to tell me what difference, if any, occurs.

I am curious to know if the dizziness abates.

I am very doubtful that your circulation gets 100% blocked. I am positive your body is as sophisticated a ‘machine’ as they come! Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this. If nothing changes, after a few classes of doing the pose with these tweaks to get what I believe is a better pose outcome, then we can pursue another path.

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
