For the last week whenever I’m entering Ustrasana my right knee hurts on the left side of the knee cap. The only other pose that it hurts in is the first part of Utkatasana. I’ve learned to just back off on the depth and then it doesn’t hurt. I’m wondering if I should be shifting my weight back further and if that’s part of the problem in that pose?

Is there a modification I should be doing for camel? It’s more than just soreness, so it does worry me a bit. Once I get into the posture it doesn’t hurt and exiting doesn’t either. Any thoughts?

    Thanks 🙂

Have you tried a regular quad stretch? Seems to me like it has to do with your quad being tight?

    Hi YogaSkier

Can you please tell me if you knee hurts in both the following circumstances?
    1>> legs hip width apart
2>> knees wider than the feet (in a V)

Perhaps too you can tell me if your knee is hurting in the area above the floor or at the floor during Camel, or if you feel a tugging sensation or pain.

Looking forward to getting more understanding.

Thanks for your reply, Gabrielle. I’m so sorry it’s taken me quite a long time to get back here….life got a wee bit challenging/crazy (depending on how you look at it!) for me for awhile!

Anyways, the night after I posted this I spoke my hot yoga studio owner (who is wonderful!) about this and she suggested that I widen my knees a bit and that seemed to solve the problem. However, after not practicing for three weeks I am back and again having problems with this knee despite widening my “stance”. I’m thinking that possibly I’m working through an old injury. Could that be possible? The pain has moved to below the knee cap and on the right side of the knee cap (right knee)

To answer your questions, the answer is yes to both. Also, it hurts as I’m going back (so the area above the floor) and not when I’m exiting the pose. It’s not like a tugging sensation, it is definitely painful!

Thanks again, it’s wonderful to have the resource!

    Hi YogaSkier

Thanks! I just realized that I don’t know if you have your hands are on your feet or if they are on your hips. If they are on your feet then I would like to ask you to tell me what happens if you just leave them on your hips and drop your head back. In this case I would probably try first with legs parallel (hip distance apart).

My hands are on my feet. So, I’ll try that tomorrow and see what happens!

Okay, so I tried keeping my hands on my hips both with legs parallel and knees/feet in a “V”. In both positions I still was in pain and ended up coming out early and not even attempting the second. 🙁 Should I just stay in the pose and work through the pain?

    Hi YogaSkier

There are 3 things that come to mind:

What does your professional health provider say is wrong with your knee(s)? Any provisional diagnosis?
Is it painful to set-up without putting your head back?
If it is then I would like to find out if you could manage a regular kneel where you sit with knees, heels and toes together and hips on heels (don’t let your heels spread out under your butt)? This is often experienced as a neutral restorative position for your knees and could help you.

First the answers the your questions, Gabrielle:

    1. It doesn’t hurt except when I’m practicing so I haven’t gone in to get it looked at.
    2. No

Well, I did some “experimenting” today with good results. I figured out if I twist my femur in my hip joint just a bit to the outside that it doesn’t hurt! I don’t know what this does to change things…but, I’m very happy that it does!

    Hi YogaSkier

What you are saying makes perfect sense! Can you make the same adjustment in Utkatasana now? Actually the way I do it is adjust my hips by swiveling them into alignment (this has effects that I can fine tune right down to the foot!).
