Hi – I am planning to attend Bikram yoga sessions on Saturday and Sunday mornings every week. I want to also establish a home practice but do I have to find a way to make the room at home as hot as the studio to get the benefits? I want to attend sessions more often but as an African American woman I can’t wash my hair everyday otherwise it will simply break off….any suggestions? Thank you.
I AM white but…… I do not wash my hair everyday either to avoid dryness and just because we really dont need to .
after and during class if I’m choosing not to wash my hair that day I just wear a band to minimize the amount going into my hair and then after run my fingers through with a little water
good luck and let my know what you thinkGreat feedback and I really appreciate it. What kind of band do you use? I have a terry cloth headband and I wonder if that is the best to do. Many thanks!
Hi Sharon
I wear a head band that is ruched for the base of the head and then opens up over the crown so that it forms a scarf or bandana effect. I have no idea what they’re called but it stops my hair from getting wet with sweat.
If I don’t wear one I have to rinse my hair.
If you do wet your hair can you just put conditioner in and not shampoo? It is after all, just sweat. Conditioner might just do the trick.

Gabrielle 🙂Great idea with to just do conditioner. I’ll try that. Thanks Gabrielle!
Hello Gabrielle: I have a hard time finding a good headband. Some are too big, too small, odd material or it will just not hold my hair back. Can you describe (or show pictures, give a brand) your headband a bit more in detail? Any help is appreciated very much!
Sharonmarie — do you have a relaxer in your hair? I am black as well and practice 5+ days per week. But my hair is not processed and is rather short. I probably wash it once a week but rinse it every day.
Yes I do have relaxer in my hair which makes lots of sweating a bit more challenging. But truth is my yoga practice takes absolute priority so I’m investigating best ways to manage short of going natural which I’m considering over the next few years…
