I have been taking Hot Yoga classes for about 3 weeks now. I drink about 60 ounces of water a day. Since starting the classes, I am extremely thirsty. I feel like I can’t get enough water. Yesterdays class, was 115 degrees. And usually I love the heat, but it felt stifling in there. And now even 24 hours later, I still feel like I haven’t had water in days. Am I just dehydrated? Or should I be worried?

    Hi Dawn

    Thanks for joining us!

It seems as though you could drink more water. 60 ounces (or about 1.8 liters) is about the amount one should really drink without going to yoga. It is possible that you are dehydrated, need some electrolytes. I would certainly try to drink another liter (increase your intake by half).

I would also like to know how accurate the room temperature reading is. 115F (or 46C) is unnecessarily high. If this level is correct then you could be experiencing some exhaustion.

115F plus a big sweat makes what we call the heat index a little excessive. Please Are you sweating a lot in the room? Because if you are then the temperature could easily be lowered to safe levels (around the 98-105 mark) and give you a very satisfying class.

You may like to read about the heat index by Googling it or take a look around the forum because it’s been discussed on numerous occasions, here are just a few examples (using the search facility up the top right corner) Heat Reaction and Do Hot Yoga Practitioners Have Odd Body Temperatures? and this one Is The Studio I Go To Overheating The Room?.

    Happy reading

    Namaste

Thank you so much for your reply. The thermostat on the wall, which was right in front of me during class, said 115 degrees. A heating and air specialist once told me that, thermostats are accurate within 2-3 degrees. So if he was correct, then it should be pretty close. This was a different studio then I usually go to. The minute I walked in, I felt uncomfortable. And I usually love the heat. Everyone in class had to drink water during the session. Usually I don’t have to until the class is over. But I drank my whole container.

Thank you for your comments. I am not as alarmed.

You might consider weighing yourself before and after class. In my case I generally sweat out about 4 pounds. With water weighing in at 8 pounds per gallon, that tells me I need to drink an additional 2 quarts on the days I do yoga.

Thanks, I will try that. I probably did not drink enough yesterday. But I guess I am concerned, because I am still excessively thirsty today.I was planning on going to class tomorrow, but I think I may wait and see if this passes.
