Hi all! I was reading through some older posts and came across one having to do with increased breakouts due to yoga practice. I too have experienced this when first starting bikram and after any breaks in my practice, I’m assuming due to the detox. It seems to clear up for me rather quickly, and my skin actually improves. Being in the beauty business there is some advice I can offer anyone who continues to suffer with this problem. Probably the most important thing would be to make sure your skin is getting sufficient exfoliation. Dead skin cells that arn’t exfoliated off the top of the skin can actually trap the sweat and bacteria underneath resulting in blackheads and breakouts. Try using an exfoliating face wash or scrub 2-3 times a week. Stay away from abrasive scrubs like St. Ives Apricot. The particles are sharp and make tiny incisions in the skin which can actually make pores larger. I’ve found that glycolic washes work wonders. They exfoliate without the grit, shrink pores, and improve texture in skin. If you like the feeling of a bit of grit in your scrub, try dermalogica’s daily microfoliant for something gentle, or DDF pumice scub for something a bit stonger. DDF also make glycolic washes. For the body, the best thing I’ve tried is Neutragena’s body scrub with salycilic acid.
Also…If you are having breakouts on your forehead, sides of face, or back of the neck, maybe try washing your hair before going to class. Sweat dripping down from your head may be carrying residual hair product. Hope this helps 🙂Great advice, Jayme! Thanks! 🙂
AnonymousGuestNovember 4, 2009 at 3:38 amPost count: 98My skin used to be terrible! Now I use the following: Dr. Brandt’s Microdermabrasion exfoliating scrub 4 times a week (it has microparticles to exfoliate so your skin isn’t scratched like Apricot scrubs do), then a gentle cleanser, DDF toner, 20% glycolic acid pads, vitamin C serum, night moisturizer. In that order. Sounds harsh, BUT this routine is the ONLY thing that keeps my skin clear. If I don’t follow the routine religiously, I will get clogged pores and rough bumpy skin. When I return to the routine, after 2 weeks (yup it takes that long), my skin is smooth and blemish free. I still have blackheads, but no zits or bumps. And THAT is a good thing!
I definitely have more breakouts since starting yoga, and they tend to be on all the areas that end up touching my towel. I also have sensitive skin, so alot of acne washes and gels are not options for me. (If I use cleanser at all, it’s usually an organic bar soap; and I use plain olive oil to spot-moisturize….)
Before yoga, I used to use straight tea tree oil on a Qtip to spot-treat pimples in the morning and before I went to bed… but straight tea tree oil is pretty strong; and for these bigger breakouts, sometimes the smell would make me nauseous and/or make my eyes water.
I found a product I’m loving – a spot treatment from Burt’s Bees:
