There was a teenage girl in class tonight who was bending her right knee while lying in savasana. She said that for the past 4 years the doctors have told her not to lie down on the floor with her legs straight because she will feel “paralyzed”, and then it will take a very long time for her to get up. She claims it is because of her right hip.

She seemed okay in every pose, but she had trouble with her right hip while bending the right knee in triangle pose. She couldn’t seem to push the hip forward, but that seems like common for beginners in triangle pose (sticking the butt out and tipping over).

She could get her hips down in fixed firm pose and then get both elbows down and her head about a foot-and-a-half from the floor without much pain.

She said that the doctors have no idea what the problem is.

Any suggestions? This girl is new to hot yoga.

    Thanks.

It’s possible she may have strained one of the hip muscles at some point, or possibly have a bulging disc in her lower back, which is pressing on a nerve. Something similar happened to me in class, I came out of camel too fast, pulled something and then felt like I couldn’t move during savasana. Quite a scary experience. Unfortunately, it now seems to occur at random intervals.

I am seeing my osteopath in a couple of weeks and will ask him if he can shed any further light on the situation.

    Hi mpowens50 and Kate

Thanks for posting! With the greatest of respect the only thing we can do here is to take a guess. The way to help this young woman is to ask her to post on the forum.

Otherwise we’re just assuming a great number of things!

I for one would have a lot of questions for her.

So mpowens50 if you can ask her to post that would be fantastic!

By the way, are you a teacher? I am curious to know.

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
