    Good morning.

I will attempt to keep this question to the point.. I have been practicing bikram yoga off and on for 17 years now, most recently 4 days a week. Ironically I came to bikram style to rehab an old foot fracture which has since healed incredibly and helped thru my practice. Without the standing balancing postures I am not so sure I would have had such great success in my rehab. Yesterday in class I did NOT feel as warm as I normally do ( ie: hot and sweating) by the time we came to standing head to knee, but I felt strong, mentally and physically. FIrst set I did my basic warm up set.. no head to knee , second set I went for it.. and that is the scene of the crime.. left leg standing head to knee, as soon as I went to put the head to knee.. I felt a sharp pain down my low back just over the buttock and in to the butt cheek ( I think) the pain brought me to my knees and there I lay till the class was on the floor at which time I tried to get up during their savasana. I did not want to disturb the class.. but I was seeing stars and literally could NOT get off the floor..the teacher assisted me, although he asked me to stay and lay still thru the rest of the class, I insisted to leave so I could try to get comfortable with ice and anti inflammatory .. since being home, I am able to move a bit better but forward bending is excruciating and sleeping well, just uncomfortable. Im on ice now .. I am sure its temporary and will go away with rest, but.. how long do I wait until my next class? and what can this be? Is it related in any way to my going to the gym ( i ironically just started the gym this week too 3 days.. working with light weight)..Help..?? Any advice and or suggestion is appreciated.

    Hi Lisa

This is short because I am just about to shut up shop for the night 😉 but I really just wanted to get to this quickly. It could be something that you have aggravated with your new gym work. My immediate question would be what do you and your gym teachers say about your core strength? Just a thought to ponder on. Your wording in your post was very interesting about when you decided to ‘go for it’. It is possible that you didn’t have your core muscles activated at the time.

I do hope you feel better soon. My opinion is that you shouldn’t go back until your acute pain has gone. When you go back you make extra concerted effort to (a) activate your core and (b) bend your legs to start, in ALL paschimottanasana poses so that you do NOT strain the same muscles again. It’s a precaution. Bend the legs and keep the back straight and then EASE into those poses including your sit-up (which of course I would avoid for the first class or 2 while). In other words, be careful and test the waters before going back to what you know your body should be able to withstand.

    Namaste

Thank you for your reply.. I know that its basic common sense at this point..and I truly want to believe it is purely muscle related so i will rest for a few days.. NOT sure that the incredibly light work out at the gym was to contribute… I think it was just me not being warmed up enough to complete my posture One of those things????.. just never had an injury from a class before and its no fun as anyone would imagine.. its more devastating to me mentally than physically.. .. aaaaargh.. Thank you so much for your reply and advise.. I love your website and information.. really great stuff.. Namaste, Lisa

OUCH!!! I feel your pain and just wanted to agree with your thoughts about not being warmed up. I also find in cooler classes that my focus though is there and may SEEM as strong is just in reality not there as much. It IS very possible that due to the lack of heat you were maybe feeling less attentive and even a bit slack? I know thats my experience anyway…. :red: GOOD LUCK on recovery and yes make sure you are feeling NO pain before returning

Hi Amy.. I appreciate your time to reply.. I agree.. the heat for me and feeling warmed up is key.. Im not a big “sweater” to begin with .. and should have known better.. OUCH is right.. I went right down with stars in my eyes.. sitting on ice as I type.. taking it easy and will deff take it slow.. Neither of which are MY STYLE.. I dont do “nothing” well.. LOL Thanks again.. enjoy the day.. I can feel the body mending with a positive attitude.. makes all the difference.
