I have an odd malady related to my practice – I notice that frequently after completing a 90 minute session, that my vision will be “foggy” for a period of time. I will see halos around lights in the evening. I am 57 years old and in great shape, and I was concerned enough to see my eye doctor about the issue. She checked out my eye health and could see no issues with something serious like cataracts. She supposed it could be eye dryness from the heat – and I have tried moisture drops with only some success. I have also tried electrolytes and extra hydration – but those don’t seem to help.
The problem always goes away on its own after a couple of hours. So I’m mostly interested in knowing if anyone else has experienced this strange side effect of Hot Yoga. If so – what do others do to minimize the problem?
Hello jrbauer01 (and welcome to the forum!).
Yes this is something I also experience, especially when there is high humidity in the room (more than 50%).
I believe it is dryness and rather than use drops, I actually go and douse my eyes quite a few times in the sink and that seems to relieve it.
It seems to be slightly aggravated when my practice is irregular, which probably emphasizes the dryness issue (ie acclimatization needs to re-occur) so I also think it might be that the eyes are getting more salty sweat in their vicinity, causing the eye to self-clean more aggressively during class, which might mean they need more soothing later?
But for me, soothing them after class a few times with water (in the first hour after class) seems to work.
They get a bit crusty too when this happens – not sure if you notice that too?
Hope that helps!
Robert
(Being short-sighted and wearing glasses I find this annoying at times too!)
I have the same symptoms of foggy vision after very hot classes. Than you for the suggestions. I will try those out.
