Kia Ora everyone,
I’m a total newbie to this site, and a relative newbie to yoga – I’ve only been practising Bikram seriously for the last 3 weeks! 🙂 I went a few times before that, but I went back to Bikram after my gym closed for the holidays. Now I’m so addicted to Bikram that I don’t think I’ll be setting foot in the gym again 😉
I’m about 15kg away from my weight goal of 70kgs – a goal which I’ve been aiming for for the last 6 years, I might add. I’ve spent so many hours in the gym, pool, pounding the pavement that I’ve lost count. I know people say it’s a myth that certain people are more ‘suited’ to exercise to others, and, although I actually love working out… it just hurts. That is, of course, until I ‘discovered’ Bikram yoga.
In the last 3 weeks I’ve been sleeping like a baby (sleeping through the night next to a ‘thrasher’ is something I’ve never experienced in the last 3 years! 😆 ), my skin feels incredible, I’m ‘regular’ for the first time in my life, I feel leaner and lighter, I’m more flexible already (I can now bend and touch my toes!) and – best of all – I just feel happier.
I thought I’d make this post to be accountable to someone else, even if no-one reads it. Now that I’m hooked on yoga, I honestly feel like my weightloss goal is firmly in my sight. I’m also doing Weight Watchers points to keep the food side of things in check. So far I’ve lost 2.2kgs 🙂
What else can I say? I’m finding most of the postures OK – not the biggest fan of the standing series, and my least favourites are Standing Head to Knee and the sitting equivalent (not sure of the name…). I just can’t straighten my damn legs! I’m sure it’ll come in time, I just have to keep reminding myself!
I have a question – for the first perhaps… 3-4 postures I feel absolutely exhausted! Is that normal? Something to do with the heat, or what I eat? I normally go to class in the morning, 9.30/10am and eat breakfast about 2-3 hours before I go. It makes me really self-conscious standing there and yawning, 😆
Namaste everyone, greetings from New Zealand,
PipWelcome to this site and the Bikram yoga, Pip!
Sounds like you’re doing everything right, lots of yoga and Weight Watchers. It’s all good.
The Standing Series – yeah, I hear ya – they can be really hard, but keep at it, you’ll get it! And remember in both Standing Head to Knee and sitting Head to Knee to keep your core strong and your butt tucked under and have patience! You made me laugh out loud when you said you’ve been at it three weeks and you *still* can’t straighten your damn legs! ha ha ha… oops, sorry …. probably took me a couple of years to get my leg straight out, much more than three weeks!

Welcome to the practice. It really does amazing things. For the exhaustion, I suggest paying close attention to your breath. I find that at the start unless I pay particular attention it is very easy to lapse into holding my breath during a posture. By the time they call the water break not breathing is no longer an option so it takes care of itself even if I don’t intentionally. Gabrielle also has a great video on breathing here on the web site. Her suggestions really added a lot of energy to my classes.Enjoy,

Lol, yeah, I guess it is a bit ridiculous to expect so much after only 3 weeks 😆 I kind of think, compared to other postures, how hard can it be to stretch down and ‘Japanese Ham Sandwich’ your face to your legs……. apparently much harder than I ever imagined. I guess patience is something that will come with time.Thank you both for your replies. Had a fantastic class today and am feeling great!
Yes — after 6 months of 5+ classes per week, I’m thinking my hamstrings might loosen up in the next 3 years. but in the end, if I dont get any less flexible over the years this will have all been well worth it. That and the 90 minute mediation I give myself 5+ times per week.
Enjoy. Take it one day at a time.
From another obsessed woman.
Springtime: Yogabody Naturals can help with that, not radically, just quietly and almost sneakily you’ll realize you’re more “bendy” than you were a week ago…
Hey!
Greet post. Glad that you are thrilled tih Hot yoga. I started in Dec so out of alignment that I was afraid the instructors knew I had scoliosis and a really bad knee they would not let me come back. I have a straight back now and working on straightening out the legs. There is about 15 minutes of posing that I dreaded, but the uphoria upon finishing is well worth the hardest parts.
