Hi! I am new to yoga and I am having a very hard time with the balancing poses. I can’t seem to stand on one leg! I’m 5’5″ tall and my feet are size 5.5, they are also narrow and have a very high arch. Does this affect my balance or is it all in my head? I find my weight constantly shifting around from the ball of my foot to the side and to my heel. Any tips than can help me find my balance?
Thanks!

Hi Jontue
You know, balance is exactly what you are experiencing: Moving backward and forward and side to side as your body is in constant search to find balance. What you need is practice at balancing and as you get that you’ll find that those gross movements become finer and finer. They won’t disappear. Balance is not a static thing.
Just surrender and don’t worry about it. Just observe and marvel at your body at work!

One instructor told me to use your peripheral vision when you have trouble balancing. Seems to help.
Hi Mary Lou
The reason that works is because when people worry about their balance they end up thinking too much and may even chastise themselves. Focusing on the peripheral vision is a way to get your attention away from your thinking mind and start to allow the natural oscillations that occur with the ‘act of balancing’ without taking your attention to them specifically.
