I have soooo many questions as I have just recently found this forum (recommended to me by a girl at my studio).
Anyway, ill start here….
In this posture, my hands are under my heels, arms pretty much behind my calves, legs are close to being straight, face is on legs below. So Im now concentrating on getting that last bit where my legs are completely straight, so Im lifting with my hips…. but then my head comes away from my shins. Im then in a real struggle between getting my head on legs (which tenses up my neck area) or lifting from the hips. Do I need to really focus on relaxing my shoulders?
ps. a little background on my bikram story… found it towards the end of last year. Did a handful of classes before christmas but decided to do a 30 challenge as a new years resolution. I started on the 1st Jan 2010… and Ive been everyday since (if i miss a day ill do a double to make up). So 30 days has turned into cracking 100 recently! I feel Ive come such a long way…. yet in the scheme of things im still in nappies.
Thanks for you advice in advance 🙂
Hi Deeny
Yes please focus on the shoulders relaxing up, up, up. There is no real benefit to getting your face on your lower legs. Proximity is the key. As you’ve already worked out, working against the natural tendency of head position will tighten your shoulders (and completely screw up the pose).
Actually I really like to do this: Move your head momentarily side to side and back to front to establish it’s loose and then let your head respond to gravity and simply hang. When your hips are up high and your legs are straight or close to it you will find that a little space opens up under your chin. This weightiness really feels great especially as you work your shoulders up. You will find that at this stage of the pose you can focus your eyes near your ankles instead of your shins.
Please let me know how you go (sorry for the late reply, this one fell through the cracks)
Namaste
