Hi!
I know some poses can bring out emotions but I generally feel very little to no emotions during class; if anything I feel happy and content. However, during floor bow I start to teeter towards anxiety. It starts before we even begin lifting our legs. Once I have the grip on my feet (maybe an inch below my toes), my heart begins to beat very hard (not necessarily faster, just very hard) and I can feel my heart beating powerfully just below my ribs. I suspect my anxiety is more so a product of being able to feel it beating so clearly and powerfully than actually being anxious about the pose, but is this normal? Does anyone else experience this? I especially notice it once we’re in the pose and told to roll our body weight forward. It doesn’t hurt or cause chest pain and stops as soon as I come out of the pose and release my feet. Just wondering if this is a normal response to this pose or something I should be concerned about?
Thanks!
AmeliaHi Amelia. Well, it is obvious that Dhanurasana, floor bow triggers anxiety for you and it begins as you anticipate the set up. I’m wondering if you can become aware of whether or not you stop breathing as you anticipate the pose? I’m sure you’ve heard of Vipassana Meditation. It is a way of transformation through self observation. I invite you to approach your posture next time as if you were just the witness to what ever happens. Don’t try to change anything about it just yet, just meet your feelings, your anxiety, whatever comes up for you as a witness to it and completely accept what’s happening. Did that make sense? If nothing else practicing this technique could reveal deeper, unconscious negative energies or self judgements that you’re harboring around this pose that you are not yet aware of. And of course, relax. Also try entering on an EXHALE after you’ve taken a BIG inhale. Hang in there. One day this will be the pose you LOVE the most!

Hi Amelia,
Just wanted to check in and see how floor bow has been going. Were you able to check in with your breath (or lack thereof) too see if it was contributing to the anxiety? Have you practiced Wendy’s advice of taking a big inhale first and beginning the pose with your exhale (continuing to work with your breath in the pose of course)?
Let me know how this one is going.
Talk to you soon,
Sara
