I am just starting bikram yoga at a studio near my home. During my first class I enjoyed myself immensly, but during a few poses I felt an all too familiar hot and sharp pain in my outer quad on my left leg. Afterword that part of my leg became numb, which also follows the old pattern. My question is will yoga do permanent damage or will it help to rehabilitate my abused muscle. I felt the pain each time I held my ankle and pushed into it by attempting to straighten my leg. It is now about 18 hours later and the numbness is roughly half what it was initially.

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Allen

There are times in the class where people are commanded to straighten legs when the benefit will be far greater to keep them bent dependent on body type or conditions or injury. It seems to me that this could be one of those times. I could be off track here so would you please go and read Opening Up Your Hamstrings With Hot Yoga? It addresses the problem of straightening or bending legs in the pose Standing Separate Leg Intense Stretch. Regardless of the pose, the pose mechanism is very important.

So perhaps another thing you could do for me is to tell me which poses you were feeling this or causing this pain in. You could go to the Resource Center and look at the poses. I have all the pictures on one page at my other site: quickfityoga. You’ll be able to see them all on one page (scroll down).

Get back to me and let me know which poses please.

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
