I’ve worked out I lose between 2 to 2.4 litres per class. This was by weighing myself before and after class, then taking into account what I’ve drunk.

I go to six or seven hot yoga (not Bikram) classes each week. The classes are one hour and the room is about 104 degrees Fahrenheit and about 50% humidity.

I finally weighed myself (without clothes) before and after class. I was 2.7 pounds lighter after class even though I drank a total of 88 ounces (5.5 pounds!) of water during and immediately after class.

    fantastic.5

i do Bikram 3 times a week and other hot yoga 4 times a week, and i do sweat a lot, one day, the other hot yoga teacher told me that that since i sweat so much each class and it is not advisable to do too much Hot yoga due to the lost of the electrode in the body which cannot be replaced by just drinking water alone.

Now, we have Bikram teachers telling us to do the 30 days or 60 days challenge,

Q: is too much Hot Yoga (sweating) no good for the body ?

Hi, what I do to get electrolytes up is this: I put celtic sea salt, which I buy from a health food store in my water and it doesn’t have the usual salty taste either as white salt. It contains a lot of minerals etc. Then I put some lemon juice in, ideally from a fresh lemon.

I’m drinking 3-4 glass of water during the day before class, 1 glass during the class and I notice I’m losing only around 2 lb.
How come? Any idea why? Please suggest.

    Hi Olga

You appear not to be drinking nearly enough water. You need over 2 liters per day every day and more on the days where you do hot yoga.

I really don’t understand the reference to 2 pounds. Are you saying you weigh yourself to determine how much water or body mass that you’re losing?

    Hey Gabrielle,
Wouldn’t the decrease in eye stinging from sweat be due to the body adapting to conserve electrolytes? I remember reading (somewhere, some athletic/fitness thing) that this is a sign of improving fitness and adaptation to an activity.

    Hi Erica

Yes, that is true for the most part. There are exceptions. There is definitely a physiological acclimatization process that includes attenuating the loss of electrolytes! But as I say, that’s only most people, not everyone! Life is never that simple. 😆

Ah but if life was simple, it wouldn’t be fun. Likewise if we were all the same!
    Thanks for the response 🙂

I am dripping by eagle. Have slippery feet in standing head to knee. And after the floor series, I look like somebody hosed me down. After class, it is flowing off my mat and about a foot to the right or behind depending on where I am in the room. At 5’2″ and 105 lbs my fellow yogis always comment on how much sweat can come from such a tiny girl. It’s almost a joke now, watch out flood Kim is coming! Lol. I do sweat alot on a normal basis but it is ridiculous in class. I drink 2 gallons of water throughout the day and bring 3 liters to class and replenish with electrolyte supplements but I am having issues with calcium deficiency (lost 2 molars and another is hollow and needs to go since beginning this journey when I’ve never even had a cavity or fractured bone before) so please be careful, heavy sweaters! Balance everything in your body! Sweat is more than just water lost!

    Hi Kim

Are you saying that before hot yoga you had no problems with your teeth? I am very curious. How have you been able to gauge the loss? What are you doing now to prevent any further problems?

Yes, sweat is way much more than water lost in terms of your ability to survive and function. Thanks for your input and if you’re willing I would really like to know more about what is going on (or has gone on) for you

    Hi Gabrielle,

I wanted to follow up on my last post in the thread Bikram/philosophy and felt that it may fit better in this thread.

Since my last post I have attended two more classes that went well but my weight difference is still a concern.(8lbs each class) For those who may not have read my last post I have returned to Bikram after practicing for several years because it just took too much out of me. Upon my return I have found that I am enjoying it more than I ever have but only practice 1 or 2x per week to make sure that I don’t get burned out again.

I have been involved with athletics all my life as a participant, teacher and coach. I have researched this dilemma and have found that many agree that a total weight loss for any activity should not be more than 2% of your body weight. At 175 lbs, that is 3.5 lbs. Because I suspected that this could have been the problem in the past, I make sure to weigh myself before and after each class and have found over 15-20 classes that my average loss is about 7lbs. I look forward to your comment as well as any others who may have a similar issue or have any knowledge of this subject. The bottom line is that I want to know if you agree with the research or if you think I have to worry about this. I am in very good health and practice other types of yoga as well.

Oh im reading all the above articles on how much people sweat and im so jealous….well I am the opposite now.   I have been practicing numerous years and have always had a great practice.  Sweated loads etc, very flexible, was bouncing come out of class.  I  changed studios one year ago as new studio is close to home..(15min and not 1 hour) and things have completely turned around.   I sweat very little, my face is redder than red, I come out of class with the bit of sweat I accomplished dried off and I am so stiff especially in the mornings.  My postures have been the worst they have ever been….   I eat well, drink water, supplement with electrolytes, have protein shakes etc.  Each class I take now I am not focused as the only thing I think of is “will I sweat”.   I am thinking of driving the one hour again.  Would I be wrong in thinking there is not enough moisture in the room.  The heat is only at 38 and has to be controlled and the room is burny sometimes on the skin.  I do not break a sweat until standing bow…not good.   It is the same with others in the room as I said im not focused and look about to see if it is just me…The heat and humidity is only turned on half hr before class starts.  I have also been getting night sweats..After an evening class now I usually wrap my body in a towel as I get into bed.  Getting frustrated so much.  Not enjoying class at all.  Its affecting my emotional state as well as my physical body .  please advise..
