I am another newbie to Bikram, and I appreciate this forum greatly! I have been practicing for a month. when I began, I did the exhales by concentrating more on “pushing” the air out using my abs, but it didn’t seem as though I was able to keep the “form” throughout the sets. Now, I have begun to concentrate on “JUST” exhaling. Concentrating the breath coming from my mouth – kind of like lamaze training, a “hu” sound. My abs are still engaged, (I can see them move in the mirror) but I’m not pushing from my abs. I have found I can do both sets of the breathing now, but am unsure if I’m doing it correctly.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Blow like you are blowing out candles 4 feet in front of you.
Pull the abs with every breath. Hard to explain. talk to a teacher and have them watch you and help you.
Remember the practice grows ver time and you will learn more every day.
Thanks for your comments. That is how I have been doing it the last few sessions, and it just feels “right” so I am glad to know it is the correct way.
Hello Andrea
I am pleased it is working for you. And thank you kindly for your comments about my website! I appreciate it greatly.
Letting go of the ‘control’ is really important. Just focus on your result. You realized it when you started only to focus on the exhales. The inhales do happen for themselves – it is a physiological phenomenon because of the negative pressures created in the thorax which suck the air in for your inhale. You may hear some people make a sssshh sssshh sound. This is far less effective – giving you far less power in your exhales, and therefore far less ability to empty your lungs and get that great abdominal effect – than what you are doing now, creating that huhh huhh sound.

Gabrielle 🙂Hi,
I don’t feel like the inhale happens automatically for me. I feel as though I am going to hyperventilate during this breathing. Often times I run out of breath or get too tired to finish this. I thought I was doing it right but I guess I’m not.
I am pushing air with my abdomen and diaphragm. But honestly it sure doesn’t feel like air is coming back in without conscious effort.
