I’ve been doing yoga for close to a year but I haven’t been stretching to the maximum until around days ago, I pushed myself and hurt my hamstring a bit. It really hurt when I walked for that night, but the next morning, the ache was totally gone.

As I go for more classes and do more stretches, I still feel this tinge of sharp pain. It doesn’t concern me much because I thought it’s normal, just probably over-stretched. But it does cause me pain when I go for yoga classes. Will it get better by its own?

I’ve been doing Bikram’s for just over two weeks, averaging 4 times per week and had my 10th class today. I would say all of my legs are sore. Kind of like the soreness of an intense leg workout at the gym. Also, for some reason, I just felt exhausted for most of the class today and had to sit down for like half of it. It was like my first time.

I had planned on going again tomorrow but I feel like I need to rest. I wonder how so many people go every day without a stop. For me, two days in a row wipe me out.

I also do kettle bell workouts but only for short 10-15 minute periods twice a week. I don’t think that’s what causes the soreness, though.

yeah i am getting the same thing. I am getting a pain on on my left hamstring, just above the knee. its fine when i walk but the sharp pain is felt when i am doing certain exercises in class. its really frustating as i am really feeling the benefit from doing bikram classes. I snapped my achilles tendon 9 months back and this is the best rehab i have had so far but this hamstring injury is really bothering me…help doc!!!

    Hi Ziad

How are you these days? It’s been 2 weeks or so since you posted and you were feeling tired. It is possible that you were not well enough hydrated or had enough electrolytes to keep your system energised. If you’ve been practising regularly and you still have issues with stamina then it’s worth addressing the basics.

    Hi jasnags

It is possible you have a hamstrings injury that existed before you started yoga. However by the sounds of it both you and Ziad could be experiencing one of the most prevalent problems in the hot yoga room – and that is instructing you to straighten legs in a few poses where really those legs should be bent.

So, please go and check out the following blog post that I wrote years ago… When you try it out let me know if this saves you both from experiencing the same pain in class…

Here’s the link here: Opening Up Your Hamstrings With Hot Yoga. You can apply this principle to other poses. Let me know how you go

Thanks for the tip. I am going for class in a few hours, so will change my grip and stance like the example you have given us.

However I am still getting pain in my left hamstring when i am doing exercises like Standing Bow Pose and Balancing Stick. Even doing the situps where i am tugging at my feet at the end movement, I can feel a slight discomfort in that area.

Anyway I am going to class now, will make the change you have recommended and see how I feel after class.

    Thanks so much

    Hi,

look !! the first law of yoga says ahmisa means giving no pains to you nor to anyone so if by trying second level yoga pose you are facing difficulty then quit it for the time being and then start after a while following yoga poses step-by-step

    Hi jasnags

So, in Standing Bow perhaps you will go in less fully and just work on form. In Sit-up, try bending the legs when you pull on the feet. Go and check out the technique in the forum and it’s fully covered in the Hot Yoga MasterClass.

It appears that your hamstrings injury has made your left hamstrings lacking some strength. Using the technique in the Hamstrings blog will actually help restore strength (as will numerous other hot yoga poses) but stretching it out may be counter productive

PS I hope that made sense, I am seriously jet lagged at the moment!

    Hi Gaby!

I think the soreness was just a matter of getting used to it. Now 7 weeks in, my legs get a little tired, but not really sore. I think part of it was also my kettle-bell routine which is also pretty challenging, but is great for endurance and core and leg strength.

I think I’ve made quite a bit of progress in the poses and now I can do most of the class. In the beginning I’d get so exhausted I would end up sitting down through half the class or more. Now I just sit for a few minutes.

Unfortunately I haven’t lost much weight, but that is likely because my diet is just not up to par. It’s hard for me to skip the junk-food. I do think the hot yoga at least does stop me from gaining weight despite a bad diet.

Thanks again, I’ll keep everyone posted about my progress.

    Hi Ziad

Any progress reports for us? Just wondering how well you’re managing with avoiding junk food. Perhaps more raw salads and fruit will help. It certainly makes you feel more healthy!

Looking forward to hearing from you
