Hi Gabrielle,
I’ve been doing Bikram for seven weeks now and feel fantastic. However, about three weeks ago I started feeling some extra stretching in my left thigh muscle while doing “Floor Bow”. As a beginner I used to have trouble with this posture so I just thought the discomfort was normal. Three practices ago i felt really bad pain in my thigh while doing this posture and also while doing “The camel”, to the point that I couldn’t do them in my practice this morning. My teachers told me to just put some ice on it and don’t put too much effort to those postures until the pain goes away.
What do you think?
I come to your site at least 5 times a week to check on tips, postures, etc… And love your newsletter as well.
I am really looking forward to reading your advise.
Kind Regards,
Manuel
Hi Manuel
Thanks so much for your kind words! Very much appreciated.
Can you please let me know where on your thigh? Is it front, back, inside, outside? I am assuming you mean the left quadriceps muscle. Just let me know whatever other specific information and we can take it from there.
Floor bow is an extremely unnatural pose: Spine and hips extended, legs flexed… Would you please take a look in the mirror next time you’re in it and tell me whether your legs are symmetrical in form, what height your feet are at and whether your shoulders are at the same level? Don’t put too much effort into it. I don’t want any risky moves, OK? 😉

Gabrielle 🙂Hi Gabrielle,
Thanks so much for your prompt reply.
The part of my thigh that hurts is indeed the left quadriceps. Specifically on the outside. I looked it up online and I think the muscle is called “Vastus Lateralis”.
Normally i am not in any pain at all. It’s only when I try to do the “Floor Bow” or “The Camel”
In regards to my posture, I can tell you exactly how i do it: My shoulders are aligned and at the same level. Usually my knees separate quite a lot as I start kicking back but I always try to bring them together as I move more into the posture and my feet are always completely visible above my head and touching each other.
Afeter I wrote to you yesterday I came back to my studio and did an evening practice just because I was frustrated that I couldn’t do “Floor Bow” and “Camel” in the morning. I tried doing “Floor Bow” and I was ablew to get my legs and chest just a bit up without effort. As soon as I started kicking back I felt the muscle pull and had to stop. I was pretty much the same with Camel.
I’ve been putting an “Arnica” unguent and ice on the muscle as my teachers said. Do you recommend to not try these two postures for a while or just keep doing them up until where I don’t feel any pain?
Again, thanks a lot.
Manuel
Hi Manuel
Quick questions between tasks…
Do you get any pain at your knee at all. Where does the pain stop? How far above the knee or extending to it? Maybe it goes below the knee or involves the patella? or by the side of the knee? Any lasting tenderness or just pain?
It’s possible that your pain is linked to the legs spreading wide and the action of bringing them back together. See if you can give me some more answers and we’ll work this out… Don’t like to jump to conclusions 😉
