Hi
I have consistently been practicing Hot Yoga 5 or 6 times a week for 6 months now. I take my class in the late afternoon and pretty much always shower, cycle home, eat dinner, watch TV / read and then go to bed. In the last couple of weeks I have been waking up at around 3.30am every morning with THE most unbearably itchy hands and feet…… really, really, horrendously itchy!
I moisturise my hands and feet every night before going to bed with good quality products (fragrance free, hypo-allergenic etc etc) and this only ever happens on the days that i have been practicing. I sleep right through on non-yoga days.
I drink a lot of water (not during class), eat a very healthy diet (pescetarian – with virtually no processed foods). Have a good sodium content in my diet with heaps of fresh fruit and veg.
I live in Denmark, so it’s cold in the evenings when i’m biking home, but i’m always dressed appropriately with thick mittens and socks etc, so my hands and feet are perfectly warm – so i don’t *think* its down to changes in temperature immediately after class….
Is this something anyone has heard of / experienced before and any tips for combating it? It’s driving me mad and i’m really tired!!
Thanks so much everyone
JJ
Hi JaneJoyce
This is a very odd problem indeed. Do you still have it now?
You have outlined some issues and some very valid ways to deal with the problem and these things don’t appear to work! Very baffling.
I would like to know if you would be willing to try going to yoga one week ONLY in the morning and see if you have the same itchiness.
Have you tried not using the moisturiser? It’s worth a try. Maybe using coconut oil. Something else.
Looking forward to your reply

Gabrielle 🙂Hi Gabrielle
Thanks for your reply.
Since my original post i have made some progress. I’ve been soaking my hands and feet in bowls of cold water with mineral salts for around 30/40 minutes before bed and it’s actually stopped the itching. So, I’m no closer to understanding why it’s been happening, but I’ve at least managed to get it under control and get some sleep!
I’m going to mention it to my doctor when I’m next there and ask that she check my thyroid – someone at my studio suggested that it might be related and my mother has a thyroid problem….. so i’ll report back FYI if anything comes of this.
I have actually switched to coconut oil for my hand moisturiser already but won’t be able to try the morning class idea because of my schedule – it’s a valid suggestion though and might well work.
Anyhow, thanks for your thoughts and reply
Namaste,
JJ
Hi JJ
If you’re willing, I would love to be updated when you have some news. It’s such an odd reaction. Wishing you calm and easy (itch-free) nights!
