I have been practicing Bikram for 6 weeks now and go 6 days a week and have doubled up on a few days (I take Sundays off). I am preparing to start a two week juice fast and my hope is to extend it to a month. I have done juice fasts in the past but I was practicing Ashtanga Yoga and they were always during the hot summer months when warm, cooked food, wasn’t appealing. I live in Maine and now that it is cooling off I just want warm soup all the time but that’s not what my body needs.

My concern is how the fast is going to effect my practice, will I have enough energy? Also, will my practice effect my fast? When I leave class all I want is a warm bowl of cooked grains and some roasted root veggies!

I would love to know other people’s experience and any guidance/advice would be well appreciated!

    Hi Jessika.

Your question in asking how a juice fast will affect your practice and energy level is difficult to answer without knowing anything about your current diet, habits, background. One thing is for sure, when you do something, you GO FULL THROTTLE!! Practicing for 6 weeks, 6 days a week, some doubles! :ahhh: And now starting a juice fast..:bug: As you know, yoga is much more than the postures. Yoga is about AWARENESS. The more experienced we are in our practices, the more awareness we have in our postures. We become aware of each postures’ traction lines, how to set those traction lines up safely, knowing which muscles to contract and which to relax. We are aware every moment of our breath, doing our best to never let it get away from us which is how we work our edge. My motto, breath not brahn. This being said, as a yogini yourself, approach your juice fast with mindful awareness to check into how your physical energy is affected by it, how your practice is affected by it etc. You have nothing to prove and everything to DISCOVER! If you’re detoxing too quickly, slow the fast down. Dilute the juice with purified water. Or stop practicing so much. And if you need something warm, make a delicious warm, savory soup in your blender. Gabrielle has a great book out right now GREEN SMOOTHIE MAGIC available on Amazon that could assist you in your fast for those days that you’re feeling it’s ok to have a smoothie if you need more BODY in the diet because energy level is low. I’m excited for your discovery during your juice fast. Here’s something I know FOR SURE about Juice Fasting. It will certainly CLEAR any lingering negative energies that your practice hasn’t accessed yet and facilitate the dropping of these energies from your being.

I’m new to the forum and noticed this thread, so I thought I’d pop in and say hi. (Hi!) I’m also new to yoga and I’ve never fasted before. What are the benefits of juice fasting?

What kind of sticky mat does your name refer if you are new to yoga sticky mat?
What are the benefits of juice fasting? Just to name a few….:-) Copied from juicefeasting website.

create a deeper, more joyful experience of life for yourself, free of physical discomfort and pain?
experience mental clarity and freedom from “brain fog?”
enjoy your body more, as it becomes the correct weight for your height?
feel proud of your radiant, glowing, healthy skin and bright, clear eyes?
enjoy eating free from guilt, and in a way that is ecologically and environmentally beneficial?
    gain more self confidence?
be blown away by how GOOD it is possible for you to feel?
kiss common colds, flus, headaches, mucus, and more goodbye?
eliminate the need for chemical pharmaceuticals and prescription drugs?
effortlessly move away from the foods that create illness because you now get FAR MORE pleasure from feeling healthy than you ever did from eating sugary, processed foods.
be a powerful example of HUMAN POTENTIAL, sharing your health secrets with the millions of people who so badly need to see and hear about vibrant, healthy people like yourself?
have consistant energy and emotional stability throughout the day?

Sticky mat refers to that sound that the mat makes when you unroll it. 🙂 I’m not so new to exercise that I’ve never unrolled a yoga mat before; I just don’t have much experience with yoga. 😉

I had no idea that juice fasting could be so beneficial. Exactly how does it work? How long are you supposed to fast for? Two weeks, like Jessika?

Thanks for the sticky mat clarification. I like it. 🙂

The minimum amount of time for a safe, effective fast is 7 days. Why? It takes about 2-3 days for the body to get the message that it needs to start breaking down the old cells (Technical term for this, Autolysis) that aren’t any good and start rebuilding. During this time you may not feel so good detoxing the old. Then as body starts rebuilding, you start to feel better. If you stop when you’re in the middle of breaking down the old and healing crisis is taking place then it misses the point of the fast cause that’s why you’re doing it in the first place.

It’s not that a one, two or three day fast isn’t safe, it just depends on why you’re doing the fast. I fast more for spiritual cleansing, emotional detoxing etc. rather than weight loss. Don’t get me wrong the weight loss is a HUGH bonus but not the motivation.

So, if you were to fast for weight-loss purposes, how long is too long? Should you take a break from juice fasting after those 7 days?

    Hi Sharon

did you ever get an answer to your juice-fast question? Wendy was helping out there for a mo! Are you goals to still lose weight with juice-fasting? How’s the shape change with hot yoga? A lot may have changed in 3 months

    Namaste

My apologies Hot Yoga Doctor. I SWEAR I answered her question!

Many people juice feast for 92 days safely! I’ve gone as long as 10.
Keep this in mind when doing it specifically for weight loss.

“Juice Feasting is not a weight loss program per se. While people do lose weight, this is a side effect of removing the toxic and extraneous matter from your system and achieving superior health. Now is the time when you can say “I am going to be fully responsible for creating the best health possible for myself!”

    Juice Feasting Accomplishments
In essentially this order – although all of these items are occurring at once – the following is what we are achieving and addressing with Juice Feasting:

    1. Ending the addition of toxic/foreign/depleted foods into our bodies.
    2. Drinking Nutrient Dense Living Juices with Superfoods/Supplements
    3. Physiological Rest
    4. Removing Uneliminated Waste Matter in Small Intestine and Colon
    5. Hydration
    6. Removing Uneliminated Toxins in the Blood, Lymph, and at the Cellular Level throughout the body
    7. Alkalinization
    8. Reduction/Eradication of Inflammation/Chronic Pain
    9. Oxygenation
    10. Rejuvenation of Metabolism and Digestive System
    11. Restoration of Nutrients
    12. Rebuilding

I’m trying to sort through the mis-information between juicing and smoothing. Gabrielle has a “smoothie” book (for which I presume that you need a blender) but I’ve heard that “juicing” (for which you would need a juicer machine- cold press or other) is the healthier (?) alternative. Any thoughts about the two processes ? Hopefully the “good HOT” doctor will join in the thread but I’m wanting to hear from other yoginis & yogis as well.

    Hi Paul

Thanks for posting. I notice you started another thread called “Smoothies & Juicing”. Since it’s exactly the same question I thought I would just pop in a ‘redirect’ here.

It might be good for it to have its own home.

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
