dear gabrielle,
while i’ve been practising yoga for 7-8 years, i’ve only just started hot yoga just over a month ago (3 times a week). it surprised me how much i love it / i love the heat and sweat and it’s never felt “too hot”/ feels natural. i also ensure i hydrate before and after…and so far i’ve only felt great.
i’ve just found out i’m pregnant (only 2 wks) and of course my ob/gyn is telling me that she is very concerned that the room is heated and may raise my core temperature, etc. and that i should not do it. i will listen to my body, but it doesn’t seem like the practice would be bad for me…however, i am relatively new to hot yoga (but not to yoga), and so, would appreciate some advice! it seems that most of posts involve more seasoned practitioners wondering if they should continue their practice. i’d be bummed to have to stop the practice during pregnancy, but of course will do what’s best.
thank you so much,
jeanHi Jean
Congratulations on your bump which is really just a little blip at the moment!!!
A few questions:
>> Can I assume you’ve read the other posts about pregnancy?
>> Is it more that you worry that you are not regular or haven’t been doing it long enough? If that’s the case, a practice for a month will have already developed your acclimatization to the heat.
>> What can you tell me about the specific temperature (and even humidity) conditions in the studio you are going to?
If you haven’t read the other posts then you will find them listed here: Pregnancy, Childbirth and Beyond. There’s one in there called “Is pregnancy hazardous to the pregnant woman or her fetus?”
Remember this is your body, your baby, YOUR choice. BUT you do need to exercise some caution. There are studios that heat their rooms to dangerous levels for ANYONE. I know of some studios that heat between 113-131F (yes 45-55 degrees celsius).
Your doctor is just doing what most doctors would do, exercising caution (yes, perhaps based on ignorance) but that’s what they do.
Namaste
Gabrielle 🙂dear gabrielle,
thank you for your quick response / yes little blip indeed though i think medically it’s “4 weeks” along / i’m excited, first time 🙂
> yes i did read all related posts on pregnancy / i really appreciate the incredible breath and depth of this website and forum, it’s so informative and helpful (like no other)
> yes i was worried that i hadn’t been practising hot yoga long enough to continue doing so while pregnant (you know how they say don’t try anything new!) the studio i go to heats the room to about 105F.
i will note that after practice on monday, i was more exhausted than normal the day after (tuesday) so i skipped practice yesterday. am thinking about going back in tomorrow but am not sure if i’m pushing too hard? will listen to my body of course.
thank you,
jean -
