My cycle has shortened to 3 weeks vs the 28 days since I’ve been practicing. Should I be concerned and see a doctor?
I think Bikram yoga affects our menstrual cycle but I see it in a positive light. In the past, I would feel cramps a few days prior to my menstrual cycle and it usually lasts a certain number of days. Ever since I took up yoga, I don’t suffer from cramps anymore and are sometimes surprised that my cycle has started b/c I don’t feel the usual “warning” signs prior to it.
Hi Martha
This sort of thing happens all the time. With the cleansing and flushing, the body works more efficiently and many systems reset. I cannot tell you that you shouldn’t see a doctor to verify this situation. You have to make that decision. But brooklynyogini’s experience can certainly be confirmed by many yoginis out there (including me).
Look inward and work out whether it FEELS right! A checkup never hurts.

Gabrielle 🙂Gabrielle,
I have a similar problem, i think. My period started a week earlier than it should (two weeks after i started doing Bikram yoga). There is always a certain day when it starts because I’m on pills. And it goes on already for a week. I’m hoping it is going to end when my regular period would have ended, otherwise I will be really worried and I’ll have to go to the gyn. I really don’t want to give up yoga – I just started and I like it so much – but I’m afraid what if heat caused such side effects from pills?
I will be really grateful for your reply.
Hi Gena
Am I to presume you are on the oral contraceptive pill? This may have something to do with the pill you are taking or the length of time you have been taking it or that a reassessment of the brand/type could be made. All of these issues are those you take up with your doc!
It can be difficult to work out the cause of something when it has happened for the first time. There could be other reasons for the irregularity. It is my experience that regularity happens over time with changes to the hormonal systems.
I would closely monitor what is going on with your dates. I know many people who have had unusual occurrences with their periods with and without the pill.
This could be a one-off. I would be interested to find out if anyone else has had the same thing happen. I don’t want to jump to any conclusions at this stage so if you feel the need for a gyn appointment go ahead. You could wait for your next cycle too and see if with regular practice everything settles down (that is if your practice has anything to do with it).
It is worth asking yourself if your level of comfort has improved with your yoga or make any other comparisons to your normal experience.

Gabrielle 🙂Hi. I recently started practicing again (after a 6 month hiatus) 6-7 times per week and am now 2 weeks late. I’m not on the pill (but am also not having sex) and am typically pretty regular. I’m kinda freakin’ out. Oh, I’m 32 if that makes a difference….
Hi Jessi
Could it be: Stress? Starting your practice anew? Maybe a change in your life somewhere? It’s hard to say. I am not really qualified to give you an answer to this one but your medical professional could help you! Are you on the pill? Did anything else in your situation change? If you’re not on any contraceptive pill then cycles do change. Even in response to other factors such as living in a houseful of females. What do you think it might be?
