I’ve been to plenty vinyasa flow classes that played music and even some hot yoga classes. But why is music never played in Bikram’s? Sometimes I think the music would keep up my motivation and concentration.

I think the answer is rooted in the philosophy of yoga…the idea of yoga originally was to prepare the body for the rigors of meditation…to work the body so it could stand to sit still for hours.

Bikran alludes to this is one of his books…the idea is “if you can meditate in his class…you can meditate anyplace”.

Try it…to meditate during triangle or camel…I have…for perhaps 1/2 second.

Music would distract…that is why its not part of the routine…at least for me.

yup, music is a distraction for the mind. Would it make the class easier, yep. Would more people come, probably. Would it make more money for the studio, absolutely.

But that isn’t what Bikram yoga is about. It is uncomfortable. It is learning to calm your mind and concentrate…you can’t do that while jammin to the oldies.

A lot of studios realize that you can make much more money by offering 60 minute classes, playing music, keeping it at a lower heat, turning on mats, etc. etc. Yes, you can make more money, but they lost their way…it’s abou the yoga and teaching, not about making money!
