Ok I will admit that I tend to take things to extreme and my yoga practice is no different. My biggest disappointment with Bikram is how little of an upper body work out it provides. For the past year I would try different cross fit type workouts but always seemed to get hurt…Bikram was my only constant. I just completed a unique thirty day challenge that was excellent (time consuming yes but EXCELLENT on so many levels). I did a traditional 30 day challenge at my home studio focusing on my traditional 6 am timeframe. Then in the evenings before bed I did the Hot Yoga Doctor DVD at home going into what I call my personal beast mode during the floor series. What that means is that I intermixed different high intensity cross training exercises in between postures (such as pushups; Burpies; planks, squats, etc…constantly mixing it up but focusing a great deal on my upper body). The 30 Day Challenge just ended and what a different I feel (my upper body has never been stronger and my wife has commented numerous times on how my muscles have grown).
It was a challenge that I plan to continue (just not everyday) and I look forward to adding this into my workouts. What I liked best about it was how the yoga postures brought me into a calm state of mind both physically and mentally (a great balance to the all out cardio workout). Just thought I would share in case someone wants to take on a new challenge….Looking forward to the beach!
That’s very interesting, Jim!
Do I understand you correctly that you kept the class going without stopping the DVD, and packed the extra activity in, within the breaks between poses? Whew! Sounds like hard work.
You’re right, great upper body strength is not the realm of the Bikram practice.
Thanks for sharing your unique spin on the challenge. I would be interested in finding out the differences between the 2 classes in terms of meditation. I figure that it is technically possible in beast mode once you’ve worked out a routine. What was it like?
Namaste
Gabrielle 🙂You are correct in that I didn’t pause the DVD but used it as a way to keep focused and stay on time. Adding the cross fit activities got easier and easier as the challenge went along and towards the end I started skipping the second set of the Bikram series to continue with an exercise routine I enjoyed and didn’t feel overextended while doing. During the floor series, I found the meditative part more in the Bikram postures rather than the cross fit exercises but on occasion the latter was true. I mixed up the cross fit activities following my favorite P90X routines (mostly focused on my upper body) which I had memorized from having completed that challenge a few years back. Overall, why I think this strategy of mixing up Bikram and Cross Fit works best for me is that the Bikram postures slowed the heart rate down and reminded me to focus on my breath. Not for everyone but I am hooked! Could be the next craze to hit the workout world! I expect royalties LOL!
You never know, Jim! Stranger things have happened. 😉
