Hi,
I was just looking over the Bikram poses and noticed that there are no shoulderstands (or anything in that family). I was just wondering why? I always thought that shoulderstands were very important asanas.
I don’t know. Maybe because it is billed as beginning yoga. Add a shoulder stand in the sequence if you want to.
Hi,
I could be wrong, but I thought some of the postures (like tortoise) produce the same effect as inverted asanas without the risk of neck injury.
Hi,

Could be.What I would worry about are neck injuries during the inital breathing exercise. That is intensive moving for the delicate neck.
The “risk of neck injury” barring some physiological malfunction is solved by intelligent practice. The “delicate neck” eventually becomes able to do what it was intended to do. If the Bikram breathing exercise is a problem for the “delicate neck” try practice over time. Eventually you will no longer have a “delicate neck”.
People routinely do the wrestler’s bridge. Or lesser neck strengthening exercises.
I can attest to the fact that the initial breathing exercise is a) intense for a tight or delicate neck such as mine and b) that the exercise does help loosen it up. I started easy, only going as far as was comfortable and now I can go further before I get to that point. It is surprisingly one of my favorite parts of the work out (started off as not a favorite because of my tight neck).
