    Hi everyone!
So I brought a whole new meaning to “corpse pose” in my practise a couple of days ago. I am on my last days of an antibiotic I’m taking for a strep infection which caused me to go from 6 days of practise to 2 last week. Then my classes got progressively worse until I hit rock bottom two days ago. By bow-pulling I was on my mat and managed to peel myself off every now and then to do half a set of a pose before collapsing again. I couldn’t even keep my eyes open and I felt hotter than ever before (and I usually embrace the heat and *HATE* it when teachers “fan” the door).

After talking with my instructor it all came down to nutrition. I had been sick, my body was dealing with that and the side-effects of the antibiotics and I was asking it to do strenuous things. The least I could do is offer it nutritious meals. I often skip breakfast before class because I don’t have time and of course I feel a difference compared to an afternoon class 3 hours after a nutritious meal. So for the past two days I haven’t worked and have had time to calculate what and when I put things into my body and I’m back to making it through (though with nausea).

Tomorrow I start my first 30 day challenge and I’m looking for tips on giving my body proper nutrition before a morning class or a class right after work when I would normally eat but don’t because I have class in an hour. and what about water? I know it’s not good to gulp an hour before class but what if i wake up an hour before class?

Personally when I go to 6am classes, I wake up an hour ahead of time and have a large coconut water with pulp.

But I think you are on the right track with listening to your body and making sure it gets what it needs!

I’m not much of a morning person. I find that when I practice in the morning I am way too stiff to go deeply into the poses and usually feel exhausted for the rest of the day. When I go to the afternoon and night classes I always have a snack about two hours before class on fruit or a handful of nuts.

    Hi Julia

It really will come down to your experimentation, how you feel etc. There are no one size fits all rules. If you are hungry before an evening class then see what time you have to add a snack mid afternoon.

If you are not up before an early class then you may need to drink small amounts through your class. You are naturally dehydrated in the morning so you should try to get at least 2 big glasses in and as much as 4-5.

On an empty stomach in the morning you will probably find that drinking slightly warm water will help you hydrate more easily because it’s easier to take than when cold.

    Hi everyone!

This is a really interesting topic for me- I love to practise in the morning, but I always feel weaker during those classes due to lack of fuel.. I cannot eat anything substantial for three to four hours before class and getting up at four to eat in preparation for class at seven is not an option…

The best thing I have come up with so far is to make a smoothie, which I have about 1 and 1/2 hour before class, I mix one packet of coco water with one banana and a table spoon of nut butter, peanut or almond. Before this (before, not after, very important!) I drink about half a litre of water. If I practised the night before, I add some sea salt to my water.

This works alright for me, but if anyone has any added suggestions for what to eat and when, and also for good snacks before evening classes, please share! 🙂
