Hi Gabrielle,
I belonged to your forum some time ago as “yogalifer” and ended up dropping out as I had to stop doing Bikram yoga. I have terrible problems with night sweats due to the heat. I can go to hot yoga classes that heat the rooms in the 90s, but anything over that messes me up.Because of this my question is not hot yoga specific (although maybe I can make it work someday). I have been caught in the corporate world for over 20 years now. When I was in college I taught Jane Fonda style aerobics classes and LOVED the fitness industry. I knew that I would be challenged to support my family in that career and so studied accounting (yuck). Well, my strategy worked. I supported my family. Now they are grown and I am SO done with it. Even though I am 49 years old, I want to change my life and pursue something I love. I really want to ultimately own a yoga studio. I feel like people might laugh because I haven’t been teaching yoga for years and years but I HAVE been practicing for 7 years. I’m willing to focus on getting into shape so that I can teach and think I could achieve that in 6 months or so as I am already in pretty good shape.
What steps would you suggest I take to begin to pursue this life change? I have the ability to save some money so plan to take the next 2-5 years saving up for this. What else should I do? How can I be accepted into the yoga community as an older newbie? I appreciate any advice or thoughts that you might have.
thanks,
CindyHi Cindy
So lovely to ‘see’ you back here again. Stay tuned, I have a fairly large number of posts ahead of yours (as in principle I like to answer them in order). Just so you know, age is definitely not a disadvantage. We’ll catch up soon for some detailed answers. 😉

Gabrielle 🙂Hi Cindy, I’m 62 years old and just graduated from the 2012 Hot Yoga Doctor teacher training in Costa Rica. I’ve been back for slightly over 6 weeks and have just finished converting one of my bedrooms into a hot yoga studio that can accommodate up to three students for under $800. I have also developed all of the new student information packets and registration forms. I’ve been teaching my wife since I came back and am now getting ready to accept my first students. I intend to accumulate about 100 hours of teaching in my small studio and then possibly branch out and either expand into another location or buy an existing studio. My motto – if you really want to do something, you can always figure out a way to make it work. Bill in Oregon.
Hi Cindy
I couldn’t have said it better myself. :cheese: I will answer your other questions more specifically in the coming days! Thanks Bill.

Gabrielle 🙂Thank you, Bill, for the inspiration! Gabrielle, when I first wrote this post I was somewhat uncertain as to my plan, but I have spent some time considering my options and definitely plan to work towards opening a yoga studio. It may take a little while to get my finances in order for that, but it feels good to have a goal to work towards. I look forward to your insight as to how to start and travel down this path.
Namaste,
