    Hey everyone!

I went to class yesterday night for a double and my teacher was quite hard on me. Don’t ask me why but he made me (and me only) hold some posture longuer and made me start again while people were waiting for me. I found this really weird since all of the other teachers are so much nicer and peaceful. Secondly. i was drained out at the floor series and i started shivering and shaking. i think it’s from overheating. What are the symptoms and was causes it? Was it because i did a double? The heat? Pushing myself too hard?

    thank you so much
    Namaste!

I wanted to give my input because I was very concerned for you when I read this!!! I did A LOT of research prior to my practice and here are some of the conclusions I’ve come up w/. Bikram CAN be dangerous if used improperly and some people do have a hard time taking the right approach to this style of yoga.
    1. belly breathe and being calm in the poses
    2. TAKE YOUR electrolyte replacements (depending on amount of classes and your diet) but make sure you are not creating an imbalance!
    3. be hydrated , rehydrate and eat properly. (some people starve themselves before and after class misreading the ’empty tummy’ advice)
    4. be mindful of the temp and your body to be sure you’re not overheating. (not over 105 or so) Some people CAN be safe in the upper 110 if you are slowly introduced to it over time but most will have trouble.

so…… you asked the symptoms of heat exposure? YOU NAMED THEM! from what i read your body was having trouble keeping your core temp in the normal range and was shutting down. The beg symptoms are headache and muscle fatigue and overall sense of being a little tired. you may get cramps in the muscles and belly and feel sick. what I found interesting too was that the w/ the beg signs your heart may not be THAT elevated and you may not FEEL that unwell yet. I take my cues in class to how I am feeling but more so after…. did it wash me out? did my heart rate keep going strong too long after class? If I answered yes…. it was too hot that day( or/and was not hydrated).
it should be a energizing calm and rewarding thing through out!!! IT”S YOGA! It should feel good and keep you loose and relaxed ;-P

I’ve been doing this yoga for 2 years now, I’m even working at the studio. I take electolytes supp… eat well… breathing is great… Only this time i was like this. I’ve been doing doubles for a while too… I think it was the heat.

thanks for your concern… I’m gonna check the heat temp next time see how high he got it.

    Hello my yogini friends

I would like to draw your attention to another thread on the forum that has a lot of information about heat, overheating, body thermoregulation, heat stroke and lots of other things!!! I hope you find it very useful.

    Here is the thread:
Is the studio I go to over-heating the room. Within it you will find an article link which I will give you here Lesley Funk’s article on exercising in the heat.

Thanks Amy for pointing out that phrase that some lose sight of:

it should be a energizing calm and rewarding thing through out!!! IT”S YOGA! It should feel good and keep you loose and relaxed 😉

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
