    Hi,

I have been practicing Bikram yoga for about two months now. During my last class which was yesterday, during the balancing stick pose while balancing on my right leg, I stretched/pulled my left leg too much in the hope of getting it more up and straight. I think one is supposed to pull up the leg through hips but I put too much pressure on my knee and I felt something tore/pulled in the back of the knee due to stretching and I have been feeling some pain in the back of the knee since then. The pain is very minimal when the leg is at rest (just a little sprain feeling). The pain increases during forward bends that include stretching along the hamstrings. The pain is focused just behind the knee, I think where hamstring muscles meet the knee.

What is the most likely reason for the pain? Is it something serious that needs to be checked? Should I continue to go to yoga or give it some rest?

Any kind of help will be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Varun

    Hi Varun

I would strongly advise some rest. If you’ve torn or damaged something then it needs to recuperate. I would ice the area too, to reduce inflammation.

See how it feels after a few days. The other important thing to do is to go and see someone – a physiotherapist – and I would do that soon. You can circumvent a ton of problems if you see someone who can put their hands directly on the problem and advise certain exercises and courses of action.

It could just take one appointment but I would want to rule out anything serious.

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
