    hi there
i practice bikram regularly at my local studio, coming up for a year now, and recently i’ve been experiencing a horrible sensation of pins and needles build up and build up throughout the class which is starting to scare me as i do not know why this is happening..

it starts in my fingertips, into the lower arm and then only affects my face and head, by the end of the class i sometimes cant do the breathing exercise because its affected my lips. sometimes i stay in savasana during the last couple postures because i feel so awful. it makes my hands close in, like a crabs pincer! it usually subsides after class after a coconut water and some electrolyte (which i regularly have in my water anyway)

ive been told i must be taking too much air through my mouth, but i know i do not do this.

could it be my pranayama breathing at the start? am i doing it wrong? or do you think it could be some kind of deficiency that i need to get looked into?

    any thoughts greatfully received! x

    Hello Sharon,

It sounds like you are really worried, I would be too. We’ll do the best to discover what the cause of your experience is and to come up with a solution.

    – Firstly, please tell me how much water you drink (on days when you practise and on days when you don’t).Do you drink during the class?
    – What kind of/How much electrolyte supplement do you take?
    – How hot is it in your studio?

In the meantime, click on the link. You’ll find essential information about Exercising in extreme heat. Read it, come back and tell us if it resonates with you.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

    Namaste,

    Andrea

    Hi Sharon,

I’m just wondering whether you are still experiencing the same issue in your class? Has your condition improved? Have you found out what caused the tingling and numbness?

I would be really curios to hear whats happened since, if you don’t mind sharing it with me. 🙂

    Namaste,

    Andrea

    hi
sorry its taken me so long to reply back!

thanks for the info on exercising in the heat…very very useful, explained nice and easy 🙂

as for water i drink…aim for 2 litres daily, normally…more on the days im practicing, ocassionally i may struggle to drink as much as i know that i should though! but i do try

i take the Emergen C sachets we sell at the studio…usually one during my class in water…sometimes one later in the day too. i drink coconut water sometimes after class too..

our studio is heated to within the 35-40 degrees C range and im not too sure on the humidity…i might have a sneaky look tonight when i go in! but some days it can feel hotter than others, with humidity up and down too…but the owners are always making sure its right for s

and yes i do still get the pins and needles ocassionally, not all the time, but i do still get a little anxious before class just in case i feel them coming on.

one teacher suggested it could be my pranayama breathing, that im not doing it right?! i dunno about that, i think im doing the same as everyone else!

another thing im gonna throw in there is that the pins/needles are actually a build up of emotions needing to come out?! strange as it may sound but i did some deep tissue massage training which works with breath and which also can bring up the same feeling which often leads to a letting out of emotion ie in the form of tears or anger or shouting for example…

    so…over to you! 😉

    Hi Sharon

It seems Ms Andrea is nowhere to be found! 😆

So firstly I think you could try to drink more every day than 2 litres. It should be minimum 2.3 for an average sized woman. Or so I am told 😉

Another liter and a half for days when you do hot yoga.

Try sea salt. Coconut water is nice but it’s not the answer. Emer-gen-C sachets i used to take a lot. Now I just put sufficient salt in my diet.

I don’t think the pins and needles are to do with one’s emotions. I think it is the result of something happening physiologically. It just really depends on the frequency and when it’s happening. Oh, perhaps you can tell me by reading your first post, whether it’s the same intensity or if anything has changed!

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
