    Hi Guy

Thank you so much! :cheese: Seems as though you have a formula that’s working for you! I am really pleased it’s working out and look forward to more updates. Variety is (sometimes) key when you are practising at home (given that most practise to audio classes it really helps to have a choice).

    Hi Everyone,
I’m new here but so happy to find this thread. I’ve been practicing Bikram Hot Style yoga once a week for the last ten years. It is my great love. I got pregnant and had a baby last year. I stopped during the pregnancy and was very excited to get back into it. It has helped me be a better person in so many ways. I just want to share my story because I too think it’s a hormonal imbalance that causes all this pain in the middle of the night. I’m 32 5’4 and am in decent shape. About 130 lbs.
post baby and I excited to get back into physical and mental shape I go to my regular classes I’ve always attended. They are always night classes. Around 1:00 am I wake up with intense anxiety, start getting really cold, begin shaking and convulsing, then sweat profusely for the next couple hours. The next day is horrible. I’m exhausted and so sore. The first couple times this happened I thought I was bonking (a term cyclists use when they’ve pushed them selves too far). The next couple times I drink tons of water eat a power bar and a electrolyte supplement coupled with coconut water after and by the bed. It happens again.
I start to think there’s really something wrong with me so I head to the doctor. She is a western med doctor and orders up a panel testing me for everything. From thyroid to arthritis. I have a hormone imbalance, I have no progesterone in my system since having the baby. I think is is what happens in peri menopausal women as well.
She suggested birth control pills which make me crazy and biosynthetic hormones which I tried for a while but made me gain weight and loose all my drive to even try to get back into the yoga. I’m so completely frustrated. I’m now 12 months post partum and still having these issues. It has been the single most humbling experience in my life. Last night was the 7th time it has happened and I’m feeling crazy for doing the same thing over and over and getting no results. My next move is to try a morning class but if that doesn’t do it, I may have to give up the only thing I’ve ever found and loved with all my heart that keeps me heathy.

I hope this helps some of you in your struggles.

    Namaste

    Hi Bailey
I have done a few things to try to manage my symptoms. I have shifted my classes to mornings 6am and make sure I eat a banana before class. I also take a sea salt or Himalayan with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice into every class. I also eat 2-3 bananas after class. So far no issues.
I have discovered I am much more a morning exerciser than evening. In evening classes when I feel I am getting too hot I lay down or even sometimes when it gets too extreme I leave the room. When I manage it this way if don’t get the issues I was having before.
Just recently the studio had the AC fixed to improve the oxygen levels in the room so I am keen to see if this helps. I am though still too scared to push too hard in an evening classes as the downsides are too much to bear.
I still think there is some health issue at the core of all this but until I get to the bottom of this by eradicating things I will never know.
Now that the AC is fixed I might try a evening class and push through to see if that is the issue.

    Hi Bailey and Guy

Thanks for posting. Bailey, do you have any comments about the heat in the room in which you practise?

Guy’s experiments to do yoga at home worked for him. Doesn’t work for everyone but it’s worth considering to test different temperature points. But first, get back to us on what you believe the temperatures and humidity levels are where you go.

Definitely try the morning class. They seem to be less humid, so the ‘multiplication’ effect of heat and humidity makes for a perception of lower heat.

Let us know how you go. You should not have to give up your love!

I just thought I would add my two cents from a nutritionist perspective. The consensus seems to be hormones but it sounds to me like an electrolyte Imbalance. When I tell my clients they have an ‘electrolyte imbalance’, Without fail they hear ‘ you don’t have enough electrolytes’. Which is not exactly the case. Imbalance simply means the levels aren’t balanced. You sweat them out in class but you might not be replenishing all of them at the same rate. Or you might have too much potassium that reacts badly when combined with having too little sodium and chloride. Its a delicate balance, and sweating a lot can upset this balance in a way that downing a few coconut waters won’t solve. None of the electrolytes act in a independently, they are a symphony; getting the right balance between is critically important to overall health.

Electrolytes are important because they are literally what makes your body and blood conduct electricity, which is needed for all functions of the body. Drinking water will help you hydrate but does little for you electrolytes aside from providing them a sufficient pool to wade around in.

Coconut water is the best replenisher after class because it has 4 electrolytes (sodium, magnesium, phosphorus and 4 bananas worth of potassium) instead of just 2 electrolytes in most sports drinks. But it doesn’t have all the electrolytes you need, and you might have been low on magnesium or another mineral before sweating what little you had out in class, so keep that in mind. Muscle contraction requires potassium, sodium, AND calcium so make sure you are getting that too. Crucially important for vegans and vegetarians and post menopausal as well as pregnant women taking hot yoga to get enough calcium. If you’re having anxiety or paranoia following class, you probably need more magnesium.

Medications are also a factor. older practitioners taking medications have a harder time reaching balance in the body. For example, Drugs like ace inhibitors or diuretics commonly prescribed for high blood pressure reduce sodium and potassium levels. Young people can see have a similar struggle if they take lithium or certain antidepressants, prescription or over the counter diuretics or even coffee. Breadfeeding also causes frequent imbalance. Most imbalances, however, are not noticeable as the body is really good at sorting itself out.

    Major electrolytes, just for fun:
    sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), chloride (Cl−), hydrogen phosphate (HPO42−), and hydrogen (bi)carbonate(HCO3−)

Although we try to replenish ourselves as quickly as possible an electrolyte imbalance simply means somewhere inside you have yet to reach homeostasis. upsetting this delicate balance can cause unsavory symptoms, but for most healthy people its not serious. Be kind and patient with yourself, don’t skip the fruit and veg (before and) after yoga! A balanced diet is just as important as chugging all that water before and after class!

Thank you for your time and for this wonderful support community. Namaste.

Its possible you are getting too much potassium. If you drink coconut water it’s Even more likely. You can eat four bananas but maybe spread it out over longer peiods of time. Weakness and fatigue are a sign that your potassium and sodium are struggling to sync up.

most people when they feel weak or sick think: what am I not getting enough of? When it might be too much. Or maybe you have everything you need but its not finding balance within you.

Its just a guess, but I had a football player as a client that was eating 6 bananas a day and he was exhausted, switched to just two and hes better… but everyone is different. The point of a forum like this is to share ideas that you perhaps havnt come to on your own.

OMG ! I just googled “Flu like symptoms after Hot Yoga” and was directed to your site. I have the identical symptoms that Shoshana described. Flu like symptoms 3-4 hours after hot yoga. The chills so badly that my body is convulsing and can not get warm even in a hot bath. Achy joints, muscle pain and nausea, super pale and I can feel my heart flutter. I also cough the day after and have a small amount of thick mucus which feels like it’s from my lungs.  I have tried everything suggested before I read other’s posts so it is comforting that I am not alone. I have practiced hot yoga for 4 years and 4 months( These symptoms started out of the blue about 4 months ago). I run marathons and have been consistently for 10 years. This is the first time I have ever had theses symptoms, like clock work. (I have felt ill after a few marathons but not all marathons and I do not consume the product Gu any more, which made me sick every time). I too, am in my 50’s (53). This has happened to me 8 or more times. I go to two different yoga studios and it has happened at both studios (a couple times during class but mostly 3-4 hours after) . I have gone to an MD who practices Holistically. I am instructed to get a blood test and she is testing me on all kinds of things, I will make sure I am tested for the things like calcium, mag, postassuim, sodium what ever is suggested. I will also see about having my Annual Yoga pass frozen for about 3 months. I have gone to none heated yoga classes with out it affecting me and will do that for the next 3 months too. Thank you for your posts. Guy, your posts are very helpful too. Thank you all for sharing !
