I have been practicing Bikram for more than a year and got to the point that my practice was getting better all the time. However, for the past 3 months I have had to sit out some poses due to dizziness or lack of strength. There are other days that I can’t wait to get out of the room and sometimes am still sweating profusely on my way home 20 minutes later. Not in my first year do I remember ever having to sit out posses. There are some days when I ask why am I doing this. I have charted my eating, hydrating, sleep and any other variable I can think of but can’t figure it out. Today after a difficult class I actually had to lay down for several hours before feeling better. Although this is rare, there are days after class that I can’t do too much else. I love my practice but am asking is this worth it? I love my bikram but must say that I took a couple of hatha yoga classes this week that felt a lot better. Looking for some suggestions because I don’t want to give this up.

did you talk to your teachers about possible condition changes in the studio???? did they put in a new system or are turning it up in temp for some reason?
I know at my studio the opp happened … I was sweating and getting amax work out then gradually I noticed I was sweating less and feeling colder ….. long story short they turned it down LOL
also over the last year how often do you practice??? does your system just need a month or week or a bit of time off?

Thank you Yoga Guru for your response. We did change studios 6 months ago but the problems started well after the change. The temp/humidity is pretty consistent so I don’t think that is a problem. I still practice 3-4 times per week. I have gone from trying to improve posses each class to simply completing the posses. Of the 3 classes this week, I was only able to complete all the posses once. I did speak to a visiting instructor today that told me that my situation was common, an experienced yogi who had experienced so much improvement hits a wall. After speaking to her for some time she thought that I was also salt deficient and gave me some suggestions for that as well. I am going to take a vacation this week so I will have 5 or six days completely off.
Thanks again and I would love to hear from Gabrielle and any others regarding my dilemma.

    Hi Mark

Interesting! OK, you mention the salt deficiency and this could be an issue. Have you yet had your blood checked? I think getting a baseline reading would be well worthwhile.

When you do, remember to also ask for a 25 Hydroxy test for your Vitamin D levels too.

If you’ve been around the forum for a while you’ll see I recommend using the good salts (totally unprocessed sea salt with all its nutrients). As for your eating: We have been having a ton of success eating a greater proportion of raw food (and organic) so I am wondering what your dietary habits are like.

A couple of other things that would be useful:

Please let me know if there are any particular poses that could be an issue (it’s possible!).

And make sure after class you stay in Savasana for sufficient time. I know that people who leave too quickly tend to sweat for longer. Although I do have to say that if you’re having challenges DURING class then this may not actually be your issue, but it would help your recovery.

We will get to the bottom of this… let’s just explore some possibilities!

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂

    Thanks Gabrielle,

I will look into the blood test. I have tried a new drink recipe given to me by a visiting instructor that consists of water, lemon, maple syrup and sea salt. Although it has only been a few days I did have a great class yesterday and felt good after class as well. That was my first class in 8 days so I really don’t know if it was the rest or the drink.

I do consume a great deal of fruit and watch what I eat for the most part. I am hopeful that my practice will get back to where it was.

    Hi Sully

I suffered from exactly the same things you have described

It could be worth having your thyroid levels checked out. Make sure they do more than one type of test, though, as not all of them give an accurate reading.

Long story short – I had a few issues that led to hypothyroidism and it made it very difficult to cope with the heat in the studio, partly because my core temperature was a bit too low and it was exhausting my thyroid and adrenal glands trying to cope. Hormonal balance is very delicate – if one is too high or too low, it makes all the rest go out of balance.

    Just something to think about
