Hi all,
I just started doing bikram about 2 weeks ago. When I started off I did 3 days straight then decided to do it every 2nd day. Since I felt really guilty on the days I don’t attend, I immediately jump into doing it every day. I did really well, put lots of concentration and 100% on each pose, I did look forward to each class, even ask the teacher if I can go twice a day.
After 11 days straight of bikram and by the looks of it I’m not going today.
It all started from yesterday’s class, The first 10 minutes, I really couldn’t breath, I tried to control my breathing, did everything so I can keep my mind focus, I was really exhausted, it was a lot worst then my first class. I was close to the point of crying and to run out of the class, but to save myself from looking like an idiot, I stayed in class. Not even trying throughout the whole class, but got very angry in between each poses. That night I slept 12 hours straight, then been taking a lot of naps constantly throughout the whole day, I could sleep more, but I know it would ruin my sleeping pattern, so trying to keep myself up.
I really don’t know if I should continue on, I will be going away for work in a week, and I need a lot of energy for that next 2 weeks, if I kept on feeling how I am now, I be in big trouble! =(
Please help!
Thank you so much.
I find that taking breaks from time to time are very much needed.
Especially if you haven’t been hydrating well, sleeping good at night, working a ton of hours during the day, etc.
The thing about this yoga is you can ALWAYS go back to it. It is a life-long practice.
I did 20 days last month, and this month I’ve only been to 3 classes so far.
The “guilt” is the hardest thing to get out of your head ;).
Hi Dana,
I am a graduate from Gabrielle’s Teacher Training!
It’s great that you found Hot Yoga! 🙂 I hope we can help you feel much better so you can continue your practice!
Let me ask you a few questions:
– How much water do you drink?
– Do you eat on the days you practise?
– Do you supplement? If yes, what do you take? How do you replenish your electrolytes?
– Do you happen to know what the temperature is in your studio? Please get back to me on these, as soon as you can!
Also, Allison is right, guilt is not the kind of motivation that should get you to yoga classes. You have no reason for feeling guilty. Enjoy your practice instead, listen to your body! If it’s resting what it needs, let it be! Rest, eat well and drink plenty of water!
I am looking forward to hearing from you!
Namaste,
Andrea
Hi Dana
Thanks Andrea for the sage advice!
When you are feeling guilty because you can’t feed your ‘addiction’, sometimes it’s good to force yourself not to go and then BE OK WITH THAT! It’s great to feel a strong desire to go but don’t get so attached to that desire that it takes hold of you to a point of obsession.
Besides being MANY things, it’s exercise, it’s healthy, it’s supposed to be a way to reduce your stress. If it’s causing you some then it’s time to stand back…
Namaste
