I started Bikram Yoga in March. I believe I have completed around
53 classes since March 21st. I had gotten up to 16 days in a row
before having to take a couple days off due to a stomach virus and am
now back up to 17 days in a row (So that’s 33 classes in the last 35
days). When I started, there was no way I was going to get my fingers
under my feet on standing head to knee like the crazy person on the
podium was telling me to! 😉 Well… after not quite a couple of
months of practice, I could get my fingers under my feet in standing
head to knee and seated separate leg head to knee (although with knee
bent up quite a bit in the latter). The fingers aren’t interlocked
yet, but they’re under there. I think this is where my problem started
– to get my fingers under my feet, I was initially creating quite a
bit of compression/pressure on my ribcage – now my ribs are *really*
sore – especially on the right side. I’m about 6’3″, 280#, and, since
starting Bikram Yoga, my jacket size has increased from 52 inches to
54 inches. The pain is exactly where my leg was/is compressing my
ribcage. I am doing OK now with standing head to knee, but the rib
discomfort is causing me quite a bit of trouble with standing separate
leg head to knee, all of the spine series, and seated separate leg
head to knee (the last pose is the worst as far as discomfort). It is
definitely not a pulled muscle… It’s more of an “achy” pain than the
“sharp” pain from a pulled muscle. It also doesn’t bother me very much
when breathing… Also, I’m undecided if it’s just my ribs or if it’s
also what’s under my ribs that are sore. They’ve been very sore for
about a month now and it’s been fairly frustrating to be “missing out”
on the full benefits of the poses that I’m not able to do as
effectively due to the discomfort, and, most nights, I’m not able to
do seated separate leg head to knee at all.I’ve asked all of the instructors I’ve taken class with and they
haven’t have any suggestions nor does it seem that they’ve heard of
this particular problem. Have you seen this sort of thing before?
Do you have any suggestions and/or advice that may help me?Hi,
I think this is my first post but I’ve been lurking here for quite awhile. I’ve been practicing Bikram yoga for about 16 months now. The following is a reply I wrote a few months ago to someone else with a similar sounding problem. Maybe it applies to you as well.
“I had a similar condition a few weeks after I started practicing Bikram’s yoga. I went to my doctor and was diagnosed with a case of Costochondritis. I/we couldn’t say my practice was the cause of this condition but I was concerned. The doctor suggested I take it easy on any of the postures that induced pain and to take ibuprofen regularly for 1 week then once a day for the next week to speed my recovery time. It worked! Of course I don’t know if this is what you’ve got, but here’s a link to some general info on Costochondritis. http://orthopedics.about.com/cs/sprainsstrains/a/costochondritis.ht… “
Good luck,
DavidYogaguy: Thanks for that feedback. That’s a definite possibility as I do have a condition that would make me more susceptible to that sort of inflammation.
Wow, that is a great recommendation. I am so grateful for these kinds of conversations that connect people in a meaningful way.
Please come back to inform us of any progress or news.
Namaste
Gabrielle 🙂greetings!
When I first started bikram (two weeks after the first class) i had some serious rib pain. this was the first yoga that i did despite being an active person for the past couple of decades. i felt like a whole part of my muscle moved. i laid off bikram for a week and got some massages and eased back in. A year later i also developed pain in my lower ribs – ends up i had a small fracture there. get an x-ray. sometimes some old injuries (some that you never thought that you had/remembered about) pop back up. and now they can heal properly. Good luck and stick with it.
