I injured my SI joint 1 1/2 years ago in a car accident. After lots of physical therapy, I am trying to resume my yoga practice. I started hot yoga 3 weeks ago, but my pain seems to be increasing. I don’t want to give up yoga, but don’t want to make my injury any worse. Any advice?

    Hi Johanna

May I please ask you in which poses you feel your back reacting and if you can be as specific as possible I would be very grateful. Please detail what you are doing when you feel the problems. Also what relieves your pain?

I was released from PT several months ago. My Orthopedic back specialist advised me that the more exercise and the stronger I get, the better off my back will be.

The poses that seem to aggravate my back are warrior, triangle, and cobra. Gentle pose and child’s pose bring the most relief.

    Gabrielle,
    I don’t think I was specific enough.
I feel the pain set in about 20 to 30 min into class. It is not severe until about 1 hour after class is over. I feel it at the SI joint. Occasionally, the pain will radiate down the side of my leg. The right side is worse than the left.

    Hi Johanna

It occurs to me that I don’t know how frequent your practice is. Exercising too much may be causing difficulty. Rest is always an important factor in healing. Of course I am not advocating not going at all. I don’t know enough about your situation. So please tell me how often you’re going to class each week.

When you say warrior pose does that refer to the classic Bikram style Standing Sep Leg Stretch pose? If so I have some further questions about technique possibly straining the area. Triangle pose I think I want to wait for the answer to the question above because generally Triangle follows the warrior. So the answer may depend on what I understand.

Cobra: Wondering what would happen if you used your hands a little to transfer the effort – share the load for a while. Can you tell me what happens?
