I somehow got a bulging disc a little over a year ago resulting in painful sciatica all down my right leg. After an ineffective epidural and several months of walking and Mckenzie exercises I decided to return to Bikram and give myself a 30 day challenge. I’ve been very careful in forward bending postures to avoid re-injury. Tomorrow is day 18 and everything has been going great.
Just now I rose up from bed rather quickly and that all too familiar pain hit me like a ton of bricks. I took an nsaid but it is really hurting. Should I try to go tomorrow and take it really easy or would it make more sense to take the day off and come up 13 days short on my challenge? Obviously, if I’m in great pain in the morning I shouldn’t go but what if it’s not as bad? It’s not nearly as bad as last night. I’m not certain that it wasn’t a cramp causing pressure on the nerve. I’ve heard of that happening with internal obliques. I’m going to go for it and just be extra careful. I’ll post an update after class.
Hi Davis
Yes, please keep us updated. I would be concerned too. Let me know before I ‘jump’ to any conclusions

Gabrielle 🙂I went to class and avoided too much forward bending. Everything went great. I am having some pain right now but I’m hoping a good night’s sleep will cure that. Nothing like last night, though. That was super scary. I plan to keep going to class everyday and stay ultra-aware of my body.
On my 20th day I was able to go all the way into camel for the first time in over 6 years. I have concentrated on going deep into back bends and taking it easy on the forward bends and haven’t experienced anymore sciatica pain.
I found this information very helpful:http://www.bikramyoga.com/BikramYoga/Herniated_Discs.php
She goes into each posture and how to approach it with a back injury. I hope this helps anyone with back problems and encourages you to continue your practice through adversity.
Hi Davis
The other essential information for you can be found here:
Opening Up Your Hamstrings With Hot Yoga. In this extremely popular blog post you’ll find a key to working with your body rather than against it. This technique is applicable to a number of poses and will help guard against injury AND help heal the problem.
Let me know how you go. I am glad to hear that there is already some progress
