After 4 months of Bikram yoga my sciatica pain caused by 4 compressed vertebrae in my lumbar region seems to be getting worse. I get shooting pains down the back of my legs and have to bend forward or go into sabasana pose. Also I am getting bloated and pass gases during classes and do my 6:15 pm class, have supper at 9pm, go to sleep at 11pm,pass gasses all night and then get up at 3 am, then it is difficult to get back to sleep. What is going on?
Hello Sammy,
I am a teacher from Gabrielle’s teacher training. She gave me permission to reply to forum posts, I hope you don’t mind that either 🙂
Gabrielle asked me to ask you to describe what you mean by compressed vertebrae! Can you give us more information and detail on that?
There are many poses in that series, that were designed to help to improve the function of the digestive system, so it is normal if it has an effect on yours. Having said that, I am curious to know what makes you think that it’s yoga that makes you bloated and gassy? What do you eat before and after your classes? Can you please tell me more about that?
I am looking forward to hearing from you!
Namaste,
Andrea
Hi Andrea,
Tks for your reply.
The sciatica is caused by compressed nerves in my lumbar region from hockey hits etc when I was a kid in Canada. I try not to eat at least 3-4 hours before my 6:15pm class, just bananas and a lot of water but we do have colon problems from my mother’s side. I am also doing acupuncture to diminish agony that is now in my right leg mostly that makes me sit down because of shooting pains. I went from 7 days per week bikram to 4 days, 2 days spin & weights and 2 days swimming. I don’t want to visit doctors cause my experience with them is they will tell me to stop doing bikram. My shrink thinks it’s great as I am bipolar 2 as well.
Namaste,
Sammy.Hi Sammy
May I ask what types of classes you attend? Can you tell me if you’re attending script based classes (one where the teachers all give exactly or almost identical instructions)? That will give me hints as to which poses you could be doing that are causing damage or at least exacerbating the damage in your back

Gabrielle 🙂Hi Sammy
Another question for you:
What treatment have you had for your compressed vertebrae? I assume it was diagnosed by a specialist and some kind of radiographic technique
