    Hi there!
So ive recently found that when i roll my left shoulder around, it clicks and crunches an awful lot.

I went to the doctor with this problem last year and she didnt say much, just that it should heal over time, i thought then that it was something I’d done working two waitressing jobs back to back (carrying heavy things etc) but now its returned im wondering if it may be yoga related…

As a Uni student, I only get the chance to practice in the hot room when im at home, so now during the easter holidays and last year during summer – both times ive done yoga.

I havnt been to yoga for over a week however and the crunching only started two days ago… so I’m not really sure if it is related.

Also ive noticed pain in my hip joints… is it possible to pull to hard in wind removing pose, as this is the one which causes the most discomfort for me….

i know its a bit vague but wondered if there was known mistakes which i might be doing to cause this, or if anyone has had similar things happen?

    Thanks
    Laura

    Hi Laura,

I too, worked in hospitality for years and when I started to do yoga I felt tension in my wrists and shoulders (carrying heavy trays is not exactly the best for them :))

There might possibly be a connection between your clicking/crunching shoulders and practising hot yoga. Does it hurt too? If yes, where exactly? Every single pose moves the shoulders around. It’s great that you are exercising your stiff shoulders, a regular practice could be more beneficial.

The most important for you to find out, is whether you are practising with the right alignment. Also, some poses may need to be modified for you. Gabrielle’s manual, The Hot Yoga MasterClass is a great source of information and you could definitely benefit from reading it. The book is a great guide to a safe home-practice and different modifications.

As to wind removing pose: Do you think you are pulling to hard? It’s a very strong hip opening pose, so what you experience could be a sign of the opening up of our hips. If you experience pain instead of discomfort, then just ‘take a step back’, don’t pull so hard.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

    Namaste,

    Andrea

Hi Andrea, thanks for your reply!

firstly, the clicking itself isn’t painful, its just a kind of dull ache underneath my shoulder blade all the time, which is worst when i first wake up and also at work (on my feet for 7 hours). My right shoulder is fine.

I am back at Uni now so when i return for summer, I will start practice again and see if the shoulder flairs up again, I wont have to write any essays which does nightmarish things to my posture!

As for wind removing… it doesnt hurt when im actually in the pose pulling but more when i go to put the leg back down there is a bit of a twinge. Again I think i will not pull as hard as I am now when i return and see if that helps.

I will definitely be getting the masterclass when i start my new job after uni, but as a lowly student, i’ll just have to wait!!

    Thanks for your advice

    Hey KarmaBanana,

I also have some shoulder noises and limited range of motion.

In my csse i think it is an or series of rotator cuff injuries or built up scar tissue, as it is my throwing arm from softball. Throwing too hard when not warmed up enough in my long ago youthful ignorance ….

Besides the noise, thete is weakness….. In wind-relieving and thread the needle pulling on legs.

    Good luck with ypur practice!

    Hi Laura

Just occurred to me that I needed to ask you something. I am wondering how you release out of wind removing pose. Do you raise the leg up in the air and straighten it? Or do you just let the leg move to the floor from the bent position foot near the bottom and then lengthen out the leg?

As for the shoulder, you would do well to work out if you have good posture when you walk and stand (let alone when you write papers!). Go and take a look at thevideo about using your arms and shoulders. You’ll find it by scrolling all the way to the bottom of the page. It’s called a Transformational Technique For Your Practice For Your Life

Both you and Wayne would probably do well to have someone take a close look at that… Sounds as though it’s time for a massage 😉

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
