I had shoulder surgery for a torn rotator cuff and bone spur several years ago. I was very diligent about going to physical therapy post surgery and have had no problems since. However, I can see that after two short months doing Bikram, my range of motion has increased. The problem I’m having though, is that this arm now seems longer….it’s not that it’s really longer, it’s just how the shoulder sits in the joint. It’s especially apparent when doing Half Moon Pose. This makes it very difficult to lock out both arms and keep my palms together, and stretch them up! I’ve tried to consciously pull that shoulder down and back, but haven’t had any luck. Anyone have a similar problem or solution?

    Thanks!!!

    Hi Dana

It is possible that you are naturally asymmetrical or your injury has created an asymmetry. Your practice could even that asymmetry out. It may not!!! All you can do is work on precision alignment. You may find that the arm that has the relative longer length may need to be slightly bent or not as straight when both arms meet above the head. Your focus on the shoulders is paramount in this case. Then it takes patience! FYI: One of my arms is slightly bent. So yes, I do know the challenge you face.

    Gab,

Four plus yrs into my practice and a shoulder(s) replacement seems inevitable. Seems drastic, but my rough and tumble life style and years of weight training, push ups, pull ups (not anymore)……plus 3 past  surgeries on one shoulder……..have caught up to me. Pain is chronic, and I do not like to ingest anti-inflammatories if I can avoid. Question: do you know of anyone who has had a SHOULDER REPLACEMENT….?………and how is that yogi doing ??

Replying to my own post: Shoulder replacement surgery in a few months. I will post here and let yooz guyz know how great (!) every thing is, how amazing my recovery is…..etc.

BUT, if any one has any info to pass along……..please do.

    Hey there!

As it happens I would have told you that I cannot recall anyone posting about their shoulder replacement!

Looking forward to your updates and am more than happy to help you with your rehabilitation modifications when you’re ready.

If you’re doing yoga now then we can work out if there is anything about your practice you can pay attention to in order to attenuate the problem prior to surgery. I would need details of poses (and probably you’ll have to answer some questions 😉 ) … I leave it to you!

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
