I am just wondering what people wear during their hot yoga?
Thanks ~eve~
SignatureArgue for your limitations, and sure enough they are yours.

I wear tiny two pieces that consist of itty bitty hot shorts and a vest type top.
I only wear things that are designed for swimming to allow for quick drying.
Now if I could only find something teeny made from something organic and non synthetic I would be an even happier hot yogini!
I have a hard time finding Speedo lycra swim shorts as Robert suggested. Does anyone in Canada know where can I buy such shorts?
Though I don’t know the answer to a retail location, I did find some possibilities on
Using “lycra swim shorts” as my search term
Maybe that could point you in the direction of a suitable brand to search for at retail?
I personally wouldn’t buy online unless it was a repeat purchase and I knew the brand/model/size since comfort is a key factor.
(Some pretty funny pictures too – especially after all the conversations we’ve had about … ummm …. bulges. Suffice to say I’d suggest there must be a reasonable gay market for this type of wear.)
😉
Thanks for the quick reply Robert. I have looked at Ebay.ca and Amazon.com. I just find it ridiculous to have to buy such item online instead of local retail store.
I guess this one and similiar ones will do the job.
Yes that’s more or less what I wear – dunno about that bright blue though – eek.
Is it because Canadians don’t swim much???? (tongue firmly in cheek)
Hi Jeffrey
You mentioned before that it was when you widen your legs that your pants move. This is really going to come down to cut and what fits your body. In effect when you try on your yoga pants you had better do a triangle pose in front of a mirror. :cheese: Should make quite a scene.
I have bought Robert really nice yoga shorts on occasion. He had to keep them for swimming only, because of the ahem… exposure. 😉 It is really case by case.
Good luck and have fun choosing!

Gabrielle 🙂Yes Gabrielle.. I need something that is skin-fit rather than baggy.
Robert, I find something that isn’t lycra. I guess anything other than cotton will do? Is there elastic on the thigh? I have big thigh.
This one looks too short?

I have stuff from speedo & zoggi and only buy online!
I find it an absurd concept of fighting through the masses after paying extortionate parking costs or schlepping on overcrowded trains to get thereto when I can make my purchase in only a couple of clicks!
But my priorities are on yoga not shopping so hey go figure! 😀
I had problems finding something suitable in the shops.
I thought the obvious thing was to try a cycle shop. I discovered that the shorts on offer were either bibbed, padded or baggy/non-stretch. I tried two dedicated cycle shops and Decathlon, a discount warehouse type place in the UK, and didn’t have much joy.
I searched around a bit online and found some shorts I am very happy with. I eventually got hold of some Craft Pro Cool Boxers from http://www.runnersworld.co.uk. Although they are described as boxers, I think that’s a misnomer – I’d call them trunks personally, and, in modesty terms, would consider them entirely suitable for a Bikram session.
Be careful though – there are two varieties of the Pro Cool, one of which is padded – do your research first! (www.wiggle.co.uk shows pictures of both, and I now recognise which is which by looking at the markings in the photo – wiggle themselves are sold out of the unpadded one unfortunately)
(Waiting for my non-stick towel order to arrive! At the moment I rent a towel from the studio, but it’s too short for Triangle, and I come very close to slipping…)

Bikram says you should be able to do Triangle on an ice rink.If you are slipping you need to concentrate on grounding your feet more and pulling the ankles together, if that makes sense!
We all used to slip when we first started but less so once you get the hang of it you won’t need to buy special towels, move them around or otherwise shift your focus from the job in hand.
Hi all
I would prefer that this stays on topic (regarding clothing!) so I will point you to some practical tips on triangle pose here: Slipping and Sliding Feet (some ideas about exactly where to place the weight on the feet and other ideas that may help you, Gavin).
People buy non-slip towels for a number of reasons: not just for triangle pose. 😉 I have never used a grippy towel but towels are props just like your mat is. If you are stepping out to the side of your mat without a towel then in effect the carpet is a prop. If one’s towel is not long enough for their warrior poses (regardless of whether they turn to the side or use their towel across the mat) then they really do have to choose the same surface for both feet.
So Gavin’s slipping may be because he has one foot on the towel and one on the carpet. And hence this could be the reason he has thought he needs a longer non-slip towel. And yes, it could also be technique (very likely). I agree with you Niki that students think they need more props when they are beginners. This could be one of those times! Do you remember when your towel would get all messed up and now it stays neat and needs no rearranging?
Oh, yeah, and if anyone has pictures of people doing yoga on ice rinks barefoot I sure would love to see them. Brrrrrr! Chalk that one up to a bit of folklore methinks. 😆 At least we all understand the message.

Gabrielle 🙂Good lord, I can’t imagine trying to do any yoga poses on ice, tirangle would be the least of my worries, imagine doing the floor series on ice! Now talk about not having a bulge in your speedo….
Thanks for the tip – I’ll certainly give it a go in the warrior poses
It’s not just the warrior poses that have prompted me to get the grippy towel – the towels for rent are much shorter than both me and the mat, so me, the people before me and the people after me are all in contact with the mat, which only gets sanitised twice daily…. anyway enough of that!

It was simply something he mentions at teacher training. No harm done!
Hi Everyone, I’m new here.
I am a fitness nut and eat right (what really matters). I love Bikram and find it challenging. I swim and weight lift really and find the sticking point in hamstring. Might be typical for males.
I am modest but have to admit I hate clingy clothe in that room. I wore running shorts shirtless. I find shorts ride up and make me self conscious. Strangely enough I never felt that way in a nylon trainer for swimming, and have been using that old trainer suit. I just don’t want to be viewed as weird. It’s square cut and dark blue.
I admit I prefer the early classes as people are older and could care less about me.
I’d like to know from the females if I am OK or should be more modest. I don’t care about my but being looked at I just don’t want to be creepy.Do females have a fair opinion on this?
I didn’t get a response. Maybe I didn’t ask correctly or no one is concern with my clothing.
I wear nylon swim training suit square cut in class of regular older people. I am not self conscious but want to be appropriate. I just put on shorts and leave after class as group of regular like to chat. I chat sometimes too however. I guess they would say something.
Any way I’ll just do what I want what is comfortable.
To be honest people are generally focused on what their own practice and don’t pay too much attention to what people are wearing. You are dresssing for comfort, and want something that has some give and isn’t too baggy or clingy and that does narrow the field some. I guess there are limits (Bikram himself wears some pretty outlandish stuff by all accounts) and I guess someone might mention it if you crossed them
I’m not entirely sure someone would say anything, that’s why I asked here informally. I’m not seen as threatening but am 6’5. I have never had this concern elsewhere so maybe I feel out of place for some reason.
I have seen inappropriate attire, such as male boxer briefs being worn and no says anything to him.
It snowed here so i didn’t go last 2 days. I’ll make it up over holidays.
Hi green apple
The truth is that it is a very rare person who would actually come up and say “I think your clothing is inappropriate”. For some reason, even if it offends, the offended person has got 2 choices; to let it go, or to carry that with them energetically and continue to be upset by it. They may even talk about it to others and not the person wearing the item in question. This is obviously not a great use of their energy. Their reaction is not the wearer’s problem. 😉
If there are no guidelines as to what you should wear or what you are not permitted to wear at your studio then what you choose is entirely up to you.
As I have written before, I think that no one should ever wear anything that requires a modesty check.
Skimpy high cut pants and low cut bras are out for me. I have a personal preference against women wearing swimwear (particularly the pants). That’s just me. For men I think a well covering bike-style short or swimwear of whatever length (short or mid thigh) seems to be an item if made out of the right material works well to move with the body and doesn’t reveal intimate shape. Everyone has nipples and bulges here and there. You can’t hide them, but you can do your best to make sure they are not the feature that attracts attention. This is yoga. There is beautiful gear around, so balance your needs to look great with your requirements for practicality and modesty.

Gabrielle 🙂Thanks for your detailed response. I am looking forward to 1/2 day tomorrow and getting a chance to go to a class. I met your guidelines, but I didn’t mention I live in bible belt. I’ll let it go and move on to worry about better things. I’ll need a few more shirts and towels to rotate.
I bruised a rib this last snow fall taking on 6 high school boys down the road in a snowball fight. I’m planning to grow up, but not sure when. My great dane went nuts watching the snow fly.
Anyone know any good places for plus size yoga clothing?
Hi,
I just recently found some plus size yoga clothing on junonia.com. I have not yet received my order, but they have the wicking material. Their products look great; however, I am not impressed with their website. The orders take forever to update online and it’s not very user friendly. I am looking forward to getting my order. Womanwithin.com also have a few things (sports bras). I also found some sports bras at Sears after driving around all day trying to find them. They were basic hanes sports bras. Picked up tank top at Old Navy although they only have up to XXL in the stores, they have plus size online. good luck – it sucks. I had to spend a lot of time shopping for plus size clothes to work for my hot yoga!Anything from hugger mugger is awesome. I usually sport the hugger mugger shorts 😉
Anyone know any good places for plus size yoga clothing?
It took a lot of searching and they don’t have a lot but they have some good stuff with non-cotton materials.lila plus. com
I have a couple things to say.
1-I wear a nylon top that was meant to be a cami, (not lingerie). It has spaghetti straps and my bra straps show. I have wondered if it is appropriate but I just started and I don’t have the money for a new top yet.
I wear cotton/spandex workout pants. I hate the cotton because it gets wet and hot but it’s all I have for now. I have been searching and searching for plus size clothing and have finally found some. Not easy to come by.2-I am not offended by men’s “bulge”. I am offended if I happen to see more than that. It is distracting. Yes, I am not supposed to be looking or whatever but sometimes you look up, someone is in front, if his shorts are loose. WHAM! There it is! Then I am distracted.
3-A little off topic but another distracting thing. Crowded room, people close to me. I have had other people’s sweat come very close to dripping on me. Now, that is distracting when you see a drip coming down on to your head. (sometimes I am in Savasana while others are doing poses, as I am new).
