    Hi all,

There are a lot of licensed Bikram studios and a lot of ‘sort of’ Bikram studios. Why sort of? Well usually flooring from my understanding, but also the ‘sort of’ Bikram seem to have a variation of poses and class length.

Has anyone gone to these other classes? The tempeture is the same. Is this still hot yoga even if its not Bikram licensed?

Any feedback would be great as I am thinking about joining one of these studios as they seem to be very clean and without smelly carpet!!

    Hi looking for balance

What would I do? I guess I would be trying the different sequences at the different studios. Work out how you feel in the smelly, the not so smelly and the nice smelling studios. It would be great if you could get good feelings about ALL the things that matter to you the most.

I can tell you that there are definitely people who will not go to a smelly studio – they are just too put off by the smell. As you probably know there is a difference between the smell of a recent hot yoga class with a number of sweaty bodies in a room compared to the rank smell of a studio with poor hygiene habits. Only you can decide what works for you.

For me I can’t bear going to a studio where I am walking through or lying down on other peoples’ sweat puddles – ycccccchh. (Oh the microbes and the stink). As I am sure I have mentioned elsewhere there are ways to keep a studio clean even with carpet but it depends on the carpet type, the way the mats and towels are placed and what studio cleanliness guidelines are in place.

Still I love the classic pose series… That was a roundabout way of saying, do enough yoga around the traps to work out what your practice priorities are. Then follow your um, (proverbial) nose :cheese:

    Hi Gabrielle,

Thanks for your input. 😉 I always look forward to your posts.

Actually, I went to one of the ‘sort of’ classes today! Beautiful bamboo floor and an infared sauna as an after class treat. It was incredible. The class was only an hour (they offer both 60 and 90 min) ; the room was 40c and all was well. What also grabbed my interest is they have a variety of classes. Vinyasa flow, Hatha, Ashtanga, and Iyengar, and the pass works at all 5 of their studios.

So, am I going back to smelly carpet? Not for the time being. A girlfriend swears her teenage son caught a bronchial virus at my old studio. Hopefully they will think about their cleanliness habits.

Does a 30 challenge mean 30 days of hotyoga or, 30 days of yoga?

    I

    Hiya

    Your experience sounds great!

Re 30 day challenge: make your own rules … and then stick to them. :cheese:

Our school changed from Bikram to just “hot yoga” and there is not that much difference. Talk to the owner or master teacher about why it’s called “hot yoga” and not “Bikram yoga”. Perhaps you will find out there were francise issues or some other business problem that has little to do with the actual delivery of services to you as a consumer.

    Hello

Just in case anyone is wondering there is actually no Bikram Yoga franchise in existence.

Quite a number of studios have a license/permission to use Bikram’s trademark and or call themselves a Bikram Yoga College of India. Others do not have the right to use his name and so they call themselves something else.

    Yes I heard about that.

At my ‘old’ studio they explained it this way: you had to train under Bikram and adhere to his studio rules: carpet, temperature, sequence etc., to use the Bikram name, but no, it is not a francise: Bikram does not benefit from a studio licensed under him. However, in the same vain I hear his training is not cheap!

I am looking forward to trying new things right now. This change was exactly what I needed!

Thank you Gabrielle for reminding me that I am my own boss and as long as I am ok with it then it is ok! 😉
