Since 1 month I have a stiff back in the morning. It always get better in the afternnoon. Actually, sitting gives the most relief.
What can this be? I’m a professional freestyle skateboarder and can’t really skate with a bad back.
Bikrams healed my 20 year old backpain, but now I got a new kind of pain: stiffness in the morning.
I tried a another madrass to sleep on. It felt better for 2 days, then it returned.
The Bikram series used to releif stiffness and pain but now after a session i feel only worse. I relaxd a few days, did nothing but walkig but it did no help.
Tips and advises?
I read the One-Legged King Pigeon Pose is good, but there is nothing like that in Bikrams…
Welcome back Stefan
I would like to ask a question as I have a need for some clarity. You mention that you have a stiff back after sleeping then later on you mention that it happens after class. If you have more specific detail that could be helpful as I am not sure when the pain is firstly appearing.
As far as sleeping occurs, I find that the best recommended sleep position is to learn to sleep on your back (if you are not already doing that). It can be very comforting to curl up on your side but it can be quite imbalancing for your spine. It certainly has worked for me and for countless others that I have recommended it to. If you are not sleeping on your back (especially in times of back ache) then it can take a number of nights to get used to. Mattresses have varying quality so it may be your mattress doesn’t suit your body, I can’t tell.
There is nothing to stop you practicing any helpful yoga pose at all even if it is not strictly in the Bikram series. I remember from your previous postings that you have a varied practice anyway. A beautifully relieving pose for your lower back is a modified child’s pose. Bring your toes together, knees widely apart and bring your body to the floor. Your arms can stay out in front with head centered face down if you are not flexible. Or you can trail your arms out and back around your legs and bring an ear to the ground. This is a much loved relaxation pose. Try it!

Gabrielle 🙂Thanks for the tip about modified childs pose!
The pain started after a nights sleep.
I get worse the day after skateboarding practice.
My good chiropractor is on vacation… I had problems for 20 years, but in early 2000 I started with Bikram Yoga (home practice) and my chirorpractor saw differences in my body and then I didn´t need to visit him again. I have had some problems after that, but usually they disappeared after 3 days of full series (home practice). But not this time 🙁 And it is wonderful skateboarding weather here in Sweden right now!
The chiropractor has now workd on my lower back, but problem is still here. He had to manipulate some and it is beter, but still stiff in the morning, and when I stand up, but good when I sit or when I skate. Strange.
I am eating some boswellia and some western medicine to get rid of the inflammation. It is a bit better, but still stiffness and pain.
Bikram Yoga no problem except the Dhanurasana (Floor Bow). It makes the pain and stiffnes worse. How can that be? And what to do?
Pain and stiffness also when laying on back, but releif laying on the side.
Any ideas?
Hello Stefan
I imagine you are feeling rather bewildered that what you are doing is just not working the way you wish it would.
My last post recommended the modified child’s pose. I am not sure if you practiced this but I would really recommend completely avoiding sit-ups for a while (maybe even until you have reduced the stiffness) and do the child’s pose as directed.
Can you answer me these couple of questions please? Do you do toe stand or do you stay in tree?
And how does your back feel when you do hands to feet and standing intense stretching poses?
Thanks for your comments on the blogs Stefan, much appreciated.

Gabrielle 🙂I do the modified childs pose, but it has not much effect. What works the most is to sit in a chair or a sofa… my chiropractor is amazed, he has never seen that before.
I avoided the sit-ups for months, but now try to do them and it feels good.
I can do the the toe stand a little bit. It is very, very good for skateboarding.
Hands to feet and standing intense stretching feels good, no problem with the back when doing them. Actually, when I stand up, like waiting for my run at a contest or demo, it feels good to bend forward… the opposite for most people with lower back problems.
Hand to feet and sitting on a chair is the most relaxing for my back, espeially If I dn’t sit too straight.
