Ok
I am hoping someone can help me with this. I am seeing improvements in all my yoga poses except none in those that require straightening the knee. For years I have been told that I have tight hamstrings but I don’t think this can be the case as I don’t have any problem with fixed firm? In head to knee if I do the grip I have to bend my knee so much I can only put the chin on the knee. Without the grip I can extend more and get the stretch in back and leg, so I prefer to do it that way much to all the teachers’ disgust! But if I do it with the grip I just feel all hunched up and awkward and not as if I am working ANYTHING! In standing separate leg I can’t get anywhere near the floor and I have tried the five minute gravity poses to help with this but so far no gains. I tried rolling forward more on the feet and this helped a tiny bit. If I bend my knees I get a better (softer) feeling in my back but where I go to classes they always say not to (in separate leg) In hands to feet I have to squat right down and lift my heels right up to get my hands under, though once I do that I can do the pose with very bent knees. I’m starting to think it is a ligament or tendon restriction rather than the hamstring, as I always feel the strain lower down behind the knee, and I feel the same strain in the longer one legged poses too. I can stand in the first part of standing head to knee but there is no way I can straighten out my leg in front of me for the next part of this pose.
Anyway any advice on particular exercises to ease this area or any help in identification of what it is would be really helpful
thanks so much
K
I have the same problem. Even as a teenager I could barely touch my toes without bending my knees. Now I have a problem with a tibia that pops out as well. I just do as much as I can though and am getting much stronger overall.
Hi Judy
I came to answer your post and that of Kirsten’s only to notice the original post is a full 12 months older than I thought. Be that as it may, I am here – finally. Straightening your knees in certain poses is overrated and is an artificial goal and gets many people out of tune with their bodies. So please tell me in which poses you have difficulty and in what way. Is it similar to Kirsten’s description of her past issues?
Namaste
